A dramatic increase in the number of men seeking tummy tucks and breast-reduction operations is fuelling a boom in the plastic surgery industry. While the recession may have hit many industries hard, there has been a rise in the number of people opting to go under the knife to improve their appearance. Figures show there were 43,069 surgical procedures carried out last year, up almost 6 per cent on 2010.

Difference in blood pressure between both arms 'reveal real health risk'
A difference in blood pressure between the right and left arm could indicate an increased risk of dying from heart disease, say doctors. They discovered that a difference in systolic blood pressure of 15mm of mercury or more between the arms is linked to hardening of the arteries supplying blood to the legs and feet. Their findings come after they reviewed 28 papers looking at variations in systolic blood pressure between the arms.

Ultrasound could be used as male contraceptive
Ultrasound could be used as a male contraceptive in the future, scientists claim. They have found that 15 minutes of ultrasound on rats reduced their sperm count to levels that would mean infertility in men. Experiments showed the most effective method was two lots of 15 minute treatment two days apart using commercially available modern ultrasound equipment.
