Emergency surgery patients' lives at risk, say surgeons
The lives of thousands of non-cardiac NHS emergency surgery patients are being risked by poor care and delays in treatment, leading surgeons say. The Royal College of Surgeons says poor access to facilities like operating theatres and scans means some abdominal emergencies are not spotted in time. The RCS also says not enough patients receive critical care after surgery.

HIV vaccine hope after new trials

A vaccine against HIV worked on 90% of volunteers in the first human tests. Scientists say it could turn the virus into a ?minor chronic infection? like herpes. Nine out of 10 volunteers given the MVA-B vaccine developed an immune response against the virus ? with 85% maintaining immunity for at least a year.

Common painkillers are found to help beat cancer

Painkillers and anti-viral drugs could be the key to tackling some of the most lethal forms of cancer, research has discovered. The drugs can help to ?turn off? a virus which is found in many tumours and is known to fuel their growth, scientists believe. By treating the virus with anti-viral and anti-inflammatory painkillers, researchers found that tumour growth rates could be slowed by up to 72 per cent.

Doctors who skip flu jab 'are putting lives at risk'

Doctors and nurses are putting lives at risk by not having their flu jabs, health officials warn. Dozens of patients have either died or become seriously ill after catching the virus in hospital ? possibly from staff treating them, a study has found. Only a third of frontline workers get the vaccine according to figures published by the Department of Health. Now a study by Imperial College London has found that at least 30 patients caught swine flu in hospital during the 2009 pandemic.

Emergency NHS surgery for elderly 'at point of neglect'

Elderly people needing emergency operations are being ignored ?to the point of neglect? because hospitals care more about meeting waiting time targets, leading surgeons warn. The Royal College of Surgeons says that up to half of the very oldest patients undergoing some types of urgent operations die each year because of poor treatment. Its report warns that patients are ?languishing? in general wards rather than in critical care, are being seen by junior staff rather than consultants and are suffering delays in their treatment. Many also develop dangerous infections.

NHS hospital in spotlight after womens' postnatal deaths

The deaths of two women shortly after giving birth have raised questions about the safety of care at an NHS hospital with the largest maternity unit in the country. Violet Stephens died at Queen's hospital in Romford, Essex, in April, just one month after a review by the care watchdog said Queen's was failing to meet essential maternity standards.
