NHS delays operations 'as it waits for patients to die or go private'
Health service trusts are ?imposing pain and inconvenience? by making patients wait longer than necessary, in some cases as long as four months, the study found. Executives believe the delays mean some people will remove themselves from lists ?either by dying or by paying for their own treatment? claims the report, by an independent watchdog that advises the NHS.

Stem cell treatment 'could prevent MS brain damage'

It will investigate if cells can slow, stop and even reverse damage to the brain and spinal cord caused by active multiple sclerosis lesions. The results will advance medical knowledge ''by years'', scientists said. The ?10 million trial, involving up to 200 patients around the world, is due to start later this year and will last between three and five years.

'Super antibody' fights off flu

The first antibody which can fight all types of the influenza A virus has been discovered, researchers claim. Experiments on flu-infected mice, published in Science Express, showed the antibody could be used as an "emergency treatment".
