Faulty gene to rescue in ovarian cancer fight
Ovarian cancer patients who carry faulty versions of a gene are more likely to survive the disease, a study has found. US experts found 44% of patients with mutated versions of the BRAC1 gene - and 52% with BRAC2 faults - were alive five years after diagnosis, probably because the mutations make them more responsive to treatments.

GPs told to quiz elderly with serious health problems about 'how they want to die'
GPs must ask the elderly with serious health problems if they want ?do not resuscitate? orders put in their files, according to senior doctors. They should also find out if patients want to die at home and whether they would rather refuse certain drugs or treatment in their final hours.

GPs in Scotland who asked elderly people to draw up "anticipatory care plans" (ACPs) saw unplanned admissions fall by 43 per cent, while the number of days they spent in hospital compared to others not asked to make the plans was 52 per cent lower.

It is a "myth" that regularly eating fried foods causes heart attacks, researchers have found, as long as you use olive oil or sunflower oil. They say there is mounting research that it is the type of oil used, and whether or not it has been used before, that really matters

London hospitals write off 'over 90%' owed by foreign patients
Some London hospitals have written off more than 90% of what they are owed by foreign patients not entitled to free NHS care, BBC London has learned. Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show Newham Hospital Trust wrote off 96% last year of what it had invoiced.
