A widely-used diabetes drug should be pulled from the market, European regulators say.
Avandia is used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients. It was licensed 10 years ago and more than 100,000 patients in the UK use it despite on-going concerns linking it to heart problems. After reviewing safety data, the European Medicines Agency said the benefits no longer outweighed the risks and it should be suspended. New fears over safety of HRT after research shows withdrawing it from women can cut breast cancer risk
The safety of hormone replacement therapy has been thrown into further doubt after research showed that withdrawing it from women reduced the risk of breast cancer. Scientists found that a decrease in the number of menopausal women taking HRT has coincided with a 10 per cent decrease in cancer rates.

Unison withdraws claim of right to NHS judicial review
Unison has withdrawn its claim that it had won the right to seek a judicial review of government plans for changes to the NHS in England. The union now says it is still waiting for a decision by a High Court judge.

Fresh call for alcohol glass ban
Alcohol should be served far more often in plastic glasses and bottles to reduce the injury toll from violent attacks, says a researcher. Dr Alasdair Forsyth, from the Glasgow Centre for the Study of Violence, told a conference that the use of glass as a weapon could be eliminated.
