Awards hat-trick for Kidderminster 'diabetes champion'
A WYRE Forest campaigner hailed as ?a diabetes champion? has been recognised with a hat-trick of awards. Fred Holland, 73, who set up the district?s branch of Diabetes UK 38 years ago, was honoured at an awards ceremony for the charity?s West Midlands volunteers. Diabetes UK mentioned.

Backers of ?dangerous? drug were funded by makers
More than nine out of 10 scientists who backed a drug at the centre of a safety scare had financial links to the pharmaceutical industry, a study has found. The disclosure will renew concern about the influence of the multinational companies on patient safety, where a warning about a drug can wipe billions from their balance sheets. Register now for 'Walk in the Park' at Hazelbank

LEADING health charity Diabetes UK Northern Ireland is calling on people in the Newtownabbey area to register now to take part in the annual Walk in The Park. This year the walk will take place at Hazelbank Park on Saturday, May 22 at 10am. Walk in the Park is a fun event for the entire family with routes suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs and all walks are dog friendly. The walk itself is two mile s and everyone who completes the route will receive a medal. Diabetes UK mentioned.

Students' fashion show fund-raising campaign wins enterprise contest

IT IS thumbs-up from a winning enterprise team at Holy Trinity Senior School, Halifax.

Part of Year 7 citizenship lessons involves students learning about charities and how they fund-raise and, over recent weeks, teams of students developed fund-raising campaigns. Diabetes UK mentioned.

Don ladies fitness wear and exercise to combat type 2 diabetes
Those with type 2 diabetes may want to invest in some new ladies fitness wear, as a recent study has suggested that exercise and a healthy diet are beneficial to people with the disease. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the research reveals that the two most common drug treatments for those with type 2 diabetes may not be the most beneficial courses of action.

Seaweed bread could be the answer to the obesity epidemic, scientists have said.
Researchers found seaweed fibre could reduce the body's fat uptake by more than 75%. A fibrous material in Sea Kelp called alginate was better at preventing fat absorption than most over-the-counter slimming treatments, laboratory tests showed.

Windpipe transplant success in UK child
A 10-year-old British boy has become the first child to undergo a windpipe transplant with an organ crafted from his own stem cells. It is hoped that using the boy's own tissue in the nine-hour operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital will cut the risk of rejection.
