The family of a young girl battling diabetes are fighting to get funding for a life-improving monitor after health chiefs refused to pay for it. Claudia Tate, nine, of Hutton, near Preston, has diabetes and her parents want a continuous glucose monitor to help control her condition and prevent her having frightening experiences when her blood glucose level falls too low. Food companies should be paid by the state to produce healthy foods and help save tens of thousands of lives, the Government's health watchdog said yesterday. Farmers could be given cash incentives to grow fruit and vegetables rather than producing fatty meats. And supermarkets could get tax breaks to stock healthy foods at affordable prices.

Listening to iPod for an hour can damage hearing
Scientists have shown that listening to music on headphones for an hour can have a temporary impact on people's hearing because of the damage caused to the hair cells in the outer ear. Participants in the study, published in the journal Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, had their hearing tested and were then asked to listen to pop or rock music for six one hour long sessions using two different types of headphones and at varying, preset volumes.
