Asparagus, garlic and artichokes 'could help fight obesity and diabetes'
Scientists are examining whether a diet rich in certain types of fibre can suppress hunger and improve the body?s ability to control blood sugar levels. Foods such as garlic, chicory, asparagus and artichokes are known as fermentable carbohydrates, which are thought to activate the release of gut hormones that reduce appetite. Diabetes UK Director of Research Dr. Iain Frame quoted.

Non-emergency 111 health number to be piloted
Trials of a three-digit telephone number for those needing non-emergency medical care in England have been launched in the North East. NHS County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trusts are to pilot the free 111 number, to act as an alternative to 999, followed by Nottingham, Lincolnshire and Luton.

Arthritis protein 'guards against Alzheimer's disease'

A protein produced in cases of rheumatoid arthritis appears to protect against the development of Alzheimer's disease, US scientists have said. In the Journal of Alzheimer's Research study, mice with memory loss given the protein fared better in tests.
