Parents of diabetic children forced to give up work

Almost half (46%) of primary school pupils with Type 1 diabetes report their parents have had to reduce hours or give up work to help them administer insulin injections, according to a new report from Diabetes UK. Around a third (29%) of their secondary school counterparts have the same experience, according to the State of diabetes care in the UK 2009 report for which 661 children and young people with Type 1 diabetes were surveyed.

Exclusive: New diabetes rules 'ignore ethnic differences'
New rules on diabetes diagnosis will ignore ethnic differences in HbA1c levels, Healthcare Republic has learned. The WHO is revising global advice on diabetes diagnosis, which includes an update on diabetes classification and the use of glucose intolerance, HbA1c and risk scores in diagnosing, screening and predicting diabetes. Its current guidelines are used by Diabetes UK and NICE.

Processed meats cause heart disease and diabetes - claim

Processed meats are already linked to a higher chance of developing bowel cancer but a round-up of worldwide research has shown a link with other conditions. Scientists discover link between gas and cases of obesity and diabetes
Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School have for the first time identified a link between blood levels of hydrogen sulfide, a gas more commonly associated with the smell of rotten eggs, and cases of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The recent study published in the medical journal Diabetologia and presented at the British Microcirculation Society in April compared blood levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in lean men, overweight men with metabolic syndrome and male patients with established type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Compton woman will keep on running
A COMPTON woman has raised about ?200 for Diabetes UK by running the Bristol 10K.

Natalie Thorne completed the race on Sunday, May 9, to raise money for the charity, as her mother Ros has Type 2 diabetes, and she has now collected the donations.
