"Shocking" lack of training for hospital staff to care for dementia patients

Hospital staff looking after dementia patients receive a ?shocking? lack of training. Two-thirds are not taught how to cope with the thousands of vulnerable people with the condition. This means many sufferers are denied the care they need and only receive ?impersonal? treatment.

Winter vomiting bug closes hospital wards across UK

Scores of hospital beds have closed because of an outbreak of the highly contagious norovirus. Health officials have urged those suffering from the virus, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, to stay at home rather than visiting their doctor's surgery or A&E, as this can easily spread the illness to vulnerable patients and health workers.

Sun 'stops chickenpox spreading'

Exposure to sunlight may help impede the spread of chickenpox, claim researchers. The University of London team found chickenpox less common in regions with high UV levels, reports the journal Virology. Sunlight may inactivate viruses on the skin, making it harder to pass on. However, other experts say that other factors, including temperature, humidity, and even living conditions are equally likely to play a role.

Academies asked to commit to healthy school meals

England's new academy schools are being urged to commit to serving healthy food to pupils. The School Food Trust, is to write to all 1400 academies asking them to confirm their adherence to national school meal nutrition standards.
