Diabetics, De Montfort University researcher's work could change your lives
A researcher at De Montfort University has developed an artificial pancreas that she says could revolutionise the treatment of diabetes. Professor Joan Taylor has created a device that could put an end to daily injections of the hormone insulin that diabetics have to endure to regulate their glucose levels. The small implant contains a solid gel which liquefies when glucose levels rise, transporting insulin to the body. The "smart gel" then re-solidifies when glucose levels have returned to normal. Victoria King, head of research at Diabetes UK, quoted.

Why exercise won't make you thin

Got a few pounds to lose? Cancel the gym membership. An increasing body of research reveals that exercise does next to nothing for you when it comes to losing weight. A result for couch potatoes, yes, but also one that could have serious implications for the government's long-term health strategy.

The test would revolutionise the diagnosis and treatment of two of Britain's biggest killers and could be available in just five years. Anyone found to be at high risk could then take potentially life-saving steps to improve their health.

The attack of the munchies

A Scottish Government survey recently blasted our nation for having the worst diet in the UK. Over two-thirds of Scots men are deemed overweight and more than six out of ten women. In both cases this is far higher than the rest of Britain and Europe. We also have a greater rate of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Glasgow is our takeaway capital with a raft of artery-blocking snacks. Nutritionist Amanda Ursell tells Douglas Walker the meals you should think twice about munching this weekend.
