'Healthy' drinks contain more sugar than we realise

A survey has shown British consumers consistently underestimate the amount of sugar contained in milkshakes, smoothies and some fruit juices. Pomegranate juice contained nearly 18 teaspoons more sugar in a serving than people realised, while a chocolate milkshake had 7.5 teaspoons more. Servings of each type of drink in the survey varied from 330ml to 1l. Research by the University of Glasgow suggests the average person in the UK consumes 3,144 calories a week through non-alcoholic liquid intake.

Walking could be a useful tool in treating depression

Something as simple as going for a brisk stroll could play an important role in fighting depression, according to researchers in Scotland. Vigorous exercise has already been shown to alleviate symptoms of depression, but the effect of less strenuous activities was unclear. A study in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity showed walking had a "large effect" on depression.

Prostate cancer trial shows fewer side-effects

A new prostate cancer treatment could provide more effective for patients and have fewer side-effects, according to a report. The study was the first to use an experimental treatment known as HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) to treat areas of cancer that are only a few millimetres in size, a technique known as focal therapy.
