NHS could be sued for neglecting elderly under new law
Age discrimination is to be outlawed in the provision of services, including health and social care, in another ground-breaking provision of the Equality Act. It will mean that doctors will no longer be able to refuse many treatments or operations to patients on the grounds that they are too old.

Take zinc to fight a cold, say scientists

While zinc is perhaps best known for protecting cars against rust, in minute quantities it has a host of important physiological functions. Now a review of 15 clinical trials published since 1984 has concluded that taking supplements can reduce the length of a cold and help ward one off in the first place.

Over-70s let down by late breast cancer diagnosis

They are also less likely to receive the same level of care as younger women, according to a study published today in the British Journal of Cancer. It showed that eight per cent of women aged 70 to 74 who had breast cancer received their diagnosis when the disease had already spread. This was almost triple the three per cent of women aged 50 to 69 who were diagnosed at a late stage.

Going bald early 'doubles prostate cancer risk'

Having high testosterone has long been linked to baldness, while it is also suspected of being a risk factor in prostate cancer, which kills about 10,000 men a year in Britain. Now French and Canadian researchers have discovered that those who develop a pronounced 'widow's peak' by 20 should be vigilant about prostate cancer in later life.

I'll take that one with a grain of salt. I get checked annually by the doc for prostate, among many other things.

Note the avatar. I'll be 64 this month. I started saving on haircuts long before I was 30.

Much like Alan I get my prostrate checked every 12-18 months by my doctor, not very pleasant when getting it done but its very quick and you go away with peace of mind that all is well.

Re the breast cancer story. I think what this actually highlights is that when screening ends at 70 many people think they are past the danger age. If you are over 70 you can still get screened but you have to organise it yourself by speaking to your Dr.
