Finally, a real breakthrough
Three cheers for the researchers who've tracked down one of the key causes of high blood pressure. Virtually every week there's some medical finding that's hailed as a breakthrough but a lot of the time, when you actually dig beneath the surface, it turns out to be a massive letdown. Not so this time. While studying pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy condition that causes dangerously high blood pressure, scientists from Cambridge and Nottingham found the very first step in the process that causes the problem.

Vitamin A pill 'could save the sight of millions as they get older'
A drug based on vitamin A could prevent millions from going blind as they get older, doctors believe. The treatment was able to stop the most common cause of blindness in old age during trials. Researchers behind the drug, fenretinide, found it halted the advance of age-related macular degeneration, for which there is currently no cure.

Depression gene could yield new treatments for patients resistant to drugs
A key gene has been found that is twice as active in depressed patients than those who are not affected by the debilitating condition. It could yield new treatments for patients resistant to current drugs. Scientists identified the gene, called MKP-1, after analysing brain tissue samples from 21 dead patients who were diagnosed with depression. Their samples were compared with those from 18 depression-free individuals.

Early menopause gene research could predict problem
Research into the genetics of early menopause may lead to a simple test for women, says a UK scientist. One in 20 women starts their menopause before the age of 46 - which can affect their chances of conceiving even a decade earlier. The study, published in Human Molecular Genetics, found that four genes working in combination appeared to raise the risk significantly.
