Charity warns over diabetes myths
A quarter of people in the UK object to diabetics injecting insulin in public, a survey said today. A total of 42% of the 2,032 people questioned also said they thought eating too much sugar caused diabetes. Diabetes UK, who conducted the myths survey to mark Diabetes Week which runs until June 19, said they were concerned by the findings. Simon O'Neill, director of care, information and advocacy services at Diabetes UK, quoted.

Hundred walkers turn out for Diabetes UK
A hundred people turned out to for a sponsored walk for Diabetes Week and raise money for Diabetes UK Cymru. The 'Walk The Extra Mile' event on Sunday 13th June in Sophia Gardens was tackled by those with diabetes and their families. Dai Williams, National Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, quoted.

Cramlington man ropes in family and friends for bed push fundraiser
A chronic diabetic roped in his family and friends to help raise funds for a health charity. It took fifteen relatives and pals five hours and 40 minutes to push Graham Thompson, 38, in his bed from Newcastle General Hospital to the Clayton Arms pub in Dudley to support Diabetes UK on Saturday.

White rice 'raises diabetes risk', say US experts
White rice has a higher glycaemic index than brown rice Replacing white rice with brown rice and wholemeal bread could cut the risk of diabetes by a third, US experts say. White rice poses a diabetes threat because it causes steep rises in blood sugar, say Harvard researchers in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Diabetes may double risk of cancer for women

Women who develop diabetes could also double their risk of cancer, a study has found. Type 2 diabetes causes insulin-like hormones to circulate through the body. Researchers found that these appeared to interact with female hormones increasing the risk of cancer in women.

Food companies in massive lobby to block colour-coded warnings

Food manufacturers have been pouring millions of pounds into a last-ditch attempt to block a European plan to put red warning labels on junk food. In one of the biggest lobbying efforts ever seen in Brussels, lobbyists for Europe's ?800m-a-year food industry have been bombarding MEPs with thousands of emails, letters and phone calls and sponsored reports, lectures and conferences ahead of a vote in the European Parliament tomorrow.

Sight loss could double by 2031
The RNIB advised people to get their eyes tested every two years The number of Scots who are blind or partially sighted could double in the next 20 years, according to a report by RNIB Scotland. The report predicted that 400,000 people could be affected by 2031, due to problems associated with an ageing population. The charity's Scottish director called for more to be spent on prevention.
