Gwynedd family back charter for young diabetics
The family of a young diabetic patient from Gwynedd are backing a new children's charter for the condition. Diabetes UK is warning that some youngsters with the illness are experiencing bullying, discrimination and isolation.

Fears over ?65bn 'NHS mortgage'
There are more than 100 PFI projects The NHS in England faces a total bill of ?65bn for new hospitals built under the private finance initiative (PFI), figures obtained by the BBC indicate. The so-called "NHS mortgage" means that for some trusts annual repayments take up more than 10% of their turnover.

'Palliative care not surgery' for the most obese

Surgery is needed before you get too fat Britain is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, with more than a million severely and morbidly obese. Surgery is available. But in this week's Scrubbing Up, Dr David Haslam, from the National Obesity Forum, warns the wrong people are getting it and says some of those who are biggest should just be offered "palliative care" for their obesity.

East Lancs hospitals' pioneering diabetic foot work

A DIABETIC foot team at East Lancashire Hospitals has been credited with giving Blackburn with Darwen the lowest level of diabetes-related limb amputation in the UK. Kath Eccles, Gill Lomax and Carl Kenwright help hundreds of diabetic people stay on their feet.

Glaxo's Lamictal drug 'can cause meningitis', warns US watchdog

America's medicines watchdog, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday warned that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)'s anti-seizure drug, Lamictal, can cause aseptic meningitis. The FDA called it a "rare but serious" side effect and said it was working with the British drug giant to update the medicine's label to include the risk. The watchdog said 40 cases of aseptic meningitis, which causes inflammation of the tissue layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord but is less serious than bacterial meningitis, were identified in patients taking Lamictal between December 1994 ? when the drug was approved ? and November 2009.
