Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi

I have type 1. I was only diagnosed a week and a half ago. I'm on Nov rapid and levermir. I keep waking up with a really bad headache. Could it be diabetes/insulin related or is just stress. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. X

Hello, and welcome to the club nobody wanted to join. There are a lot of this that could be causing headaches, and first off, if they persist, you ought to mention them to your GP or nurse. It may be just hat your nosy is getting used to having normal blood sugars again, after a period of prolonged high.
Having said that, a common cause of waking up with a headache is that your blood sugars have been low in the night, and then rebounded, so your morning reading looks fine. The only way to check is to set an alarm for 3am, when he body is usually at its lowest ebb, and see what readings you get. ( normally, you would wake up if you were low in the night, though, have you been having disturbed sleep?)

Hi and welcome to the forum

What are your blood glucose readings like? It's possible your blood glucose is going low during the night causing a hypo. Most people would normally wake up when this happens. It can then cause what's colloquially known as a hypo headache. What time(s) do you take the Levemir?

Hi I usually take my levermir at 10am/pm as it has to be 12 hours apart with an hr window either side. I can't remember the last time I slept all night. So I might just try my bs in the night. It's usually 10 in the morning. An between 9 and 11 at night before bed. I've experienced the symptoms of a low when my sugars go under 5. I get irritable, struggle with concentrating and get the shakes. I've only been in the club for 10 days. So it's probably my body readjusting. Thank you both for commenting. I've got a consultant appt in a week. If it doesn't improve then I'll mention it to him. Thanks again

Levemir isn't really that picky - I used to take one dose when I got up at approx. 7.30am ish and the other at about 9.30 to 10 pm ish.

However don't fiddle with it as yet, as it's VERY early days and better for the moment for you to keep to a fairly tight schedule so when he sees all your meter readings - there won't be too many things clouding the issue and obscuring what needs to happen next.

It may be just hat your nosy is getting .....

Love predictive text - I'm certain that actually says 'It may be just THAT your BODY is getting ..... ' LOL

Oops, yes it does. ( though I'm sure your nosy has to get used to it as well as the rest of the body) That's what comes of belting out an answer shortly before going out!

I'm type 2 and only 2 months in but when I first started managing my blood sugar and it dropped I had awful headaches for a week. I never suffer headaches unless I'm going down with an illness. No tips for curing them sorry aside from keeping well hydrated. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi and warm welcome to the forum

Hello, and welcome 🙂

Like Robin and Matt, I'd guess the headaches are likely to be caused by your blood sugar going low in the night and then going up in the morning. Do mention them to your consultant, because otherwise he may suggest you put your Levemir dose up as your morning readings are rather high, and if your blood sugar is dropping too low in the night you'll probably need to put it down.
