Hello,

My daughter has recently been having some medical issues and they have just tested her hba1c and it was 38. I know this is within the normal range for a non diabetic but is it on the high side? As the range is (18-41) in my area and she’s only 13. Her dad has type 1 and I’ve had gestational diabetes so I have to be checked yearly for type 2. Is diabetes hereditary? As I’ve had such mixed answers from doctors. Many thanks

Hi @EJK and welcome to the forum - as you say an HbA1c of 38 is normal but if you are concerned there is a screening programme for Type 1 called ELSA you could look into - see this section in the forum

We screened my daughter, takes a while to get results back.

If you are worried as her GP to test her.

I suspect you have had mixed answers because there is no definite answer.
My understanding (although I have no medical training) is the risk of diabetes is increased if a family member has it but that does not mean your daughter will definitely get it.
Nor does it mean someone with no family history is immune.

38 is normal @EJK Nine out of ten people who develop Type 1 diabetes have no close family members with it. It’s genetic in that you need the genes to get it, but most people with those genes do not get Type 1. It’s thought to be more environmental - ie some external trigger.

With a father who has Type 1, your daughter’s risk is slightly increased, but it’s still low.
