Hbac1 up: After diagnosis in April 2017 my Hbac1 was controlled by medicine and diet. Now after a stressful period its up to 61. I am so scared. My main problem is that I don't have a dietician/nutritionist from the NHS and I go off the diet. I have a sweet tooth and I stay on the diet mostly but then think since I am on Meds they are controlling my HBAC1 so I will go say 3 weeks staying on a good low sugar/no salt diet then boom I just eat whatever I want. Is there any help? My snacks are mostly fruit and popcorn or other carbs like pretzels. I haven't done a low carb diet with any commitment.

Hi @nechama rotenberg and welcome to the forum

Do you keep a food diary? I found that was one of the most helpful ways of keeping on the straight and narrow. If I was tempted to go off plan I'd look at the diary and feel so pleased with myself that I'd not snack to keep on being proud of myself. It may sound slightly strange but it worked for me. I also monitored my BG regularly so I could see what spiked me and then would know not to eat that.
I do still snack, but it tends to be on nuts and cheese which are fairly low carb.
Also, if you do fall off the wagon, don't beat yourself up. Every day is a new day in Diabetes land.

Logging onto this site every day also kept me motivated as everyone is so supportive. I don't think I could have got where I am without the advice and help from these lovely people 🙂

We need salt - if you are not eating processed foods it would be a good idea to deliberately use a small amount of salt each day, particularly in hot weather. I believe pretzels are salty, so that might be the attraction.
I know now that I had an increased Hba1c some time ago, and it has gone down again. I suspect it might have been due to Covid. I only restrict carbs, nothing else, and it seems to work.

After not keeping a food diary for years I started one today. It feels strange and sort of like a chore. Also, stopped exercising for 30 minutes a day. I am.up.to the challenge again of getting back in track. Thanks for your encouragement

@nechama rotenberg, I never even thought of having a food diary up until I started the NHS program, but it is really helping me a lot at the moment to keep track of things - it's easy to forget what you've had so keeping a diary is a good idea - In terms of it being a chore, think of it once you've eaten you need some time for that to settle so take a couple of minutes after you've eaten to put into your diary don't do it before you've eaten tho - that helped me and I'm sure you will get back on track, some time, patience and persiverance, and the rewards will come 😉
