I get my HbA1c results tomorrow - not sure what it is going to be as had a lot of hypos but also quite a few highs, consultant asked me (4 months ago) to get it up to between 7-7.5 by the time I see him again (I see him next week 😱).

This sounds just like my fathers consultant, they seem to dislike it when he is in the 6's and want him to run in the 7's.

I would ignore that advice and concentrate on trying to reduce the number of hypos myself. Narrowing the overall range is a healthier target than simply running high!

Why would he want your HbA1c to go up?

Well, consultant is going to be happy - I'm not though. HbA1c is 55/7.2% :(.

I did think it would be a little higher than last time but not that much higher.

He wants it higher as I was having loads of hypos, averaging of more than 1 a day.

On the bright side, for the past couple of weeks my BG has been pretty good, mainly within range, basically thanks to you guys for your help and advice. I now inject 30-40 mins before breakfast and my mid-morn BG is quite good, I have managed to reduce basal by 3 units too. 🙂

I have also started going to the gym - a first for me :D. I've only been twice so far but intend to keep it up and DH is encouraging me to get me going so that helps too.

Plan to have a lower HbA1c next time!

Surely the solution to that would be dose adjustment, as opposed to a higher HbA1c, which comes with higher risk of complications.......

I'm sure there is method in the madness though......7.2 is healthy enough though.........

Have you experienced less lows over the last 3 months?

Well, at least he's happy and it just comes into his range 🙂 I'm sure that you can reduce it by next time, but smoothing out the highs and lows. My lowest since diagnosis was 5.2 %, but that was when I was getting lots of hypos - I was more scared of highs than lows I think when I was first diagnosed, so I used to be a bit too generous with the novorapid. My subsequent ones have been in the mid- to high-5s, but with far fewer hypos. Plus, I imagine that by running levels a little on the high side you have good hypo awareness which will help you spot the hypos in the future and head them off before they drop too low 🙂

for some of us less serene persons, running slightly higher seems to be the only way to reduce the roller coaster of highs and lows.

I know so many on here have fab results with HbA1c's (well) below 7, but for others this is initially a step too far. Don't think you're a failure because you can't yet achieve what you want, keep trying, but do watch out for those hypos.

Yes, I have experienced less lows, still having quite a few but nowhere near the amount I was before. Would rather figure out a way to control it better though, will keep trying ...

I have always been scared of highs, still am now tbh, panic when it gets 14> and tend to then overcompensate, trying to work on it! I was educated a bit at my last clinic as to the seriousness of hypos though whereas before I had just thought they were a temporary problem with no long term effects.

Thank you! I think I find it hard to accept my control is not what it was as my HbA1c was in the 5s for several years.
