Hello,I have just had my hip replacement operation cancelled due to high hbac1 results in my pre-op,(I am insulin dependent and live very healthy lifestyle)has anybody had same thing happen?

How high is your hba1c? You might consider your lifestyle to be healthy but high a1c suggests your blood sugars need to be improved so that you can safely have your operation. Do you have a plan for improving your blood sugar control or need any help with that?

Hi Lucy,I have appointment with diabetic nurse this week,as I honestly don't know what else I can do diet/fitness wise,I think I need to up insulin units maybe, just don't want to get to next blood test in six weeks to be told no change and we still can't operate as I am in so much pain.

Do you monitor your blood sugars and adjust your doses to match what you eat? Can you give an example days blood sugars, carbohydrates and doses?

No

If you’re not monitoring your blood sugars or adjusting your doses then it’s no wonder your blood sugars are high. I would start by keeping a detailed diary between now and your DSN appointment. Write down all your blood sugars (test at a minimum before every meal and bedtime), all your carbohydrate intake in grams, and all the insulin doses with times for everything. When you see the nurse you can go through your data and start improving things.

Hi and welcome.

Have you been diagnosed a long time or just recently?
Which insulin(s) do you use?
What sort of BG levels do you see when you test and when do you test? ie. when you wake up, before meals, before bed, before you drive etc?

And which insulin(s) do you use? I am wondering if you are perhaps on a mixed insulin and that is why you don't carb count or adjust your doses yourself.

Also, who oversees your care? A nurse at the GP's surgery or a nurse or consultant at a specialist diabetes clinic?

Have been diabetic 10 years, test 4 times a day mostly before meals
And what do you do with the results? Are they generally high? The main thing we need to know to help you is what insulins you use and how/when your doses are decided and changed.
