Hi

Had my blood tests this morning. Very good nurse only had 2 attempts to get blood from me.

HBA1c: when diagnosed 9.2 (Sept 10)

October 2011: 5.8 (metformin halved)

Feb 12: 6.5 (tests done for me to join an Aspirin study).

June 12: what your best guess? I go to the gym 5 times a week instead of 3; try to be good with diet but I have a sweet tooth & at times indulge. Tried to be good recently. but just had a milky way with lunch.

Results should be back by Thursday or Friday.

My guess is probably about 6.8 or whatever that is in new score 47?ish.

Take care
Lynne

I'll go for holding steady at 6.5 🙂 Good luck!

Out of interest, why did they halve your Met when you hit 5.8? I'd have said that would have indicated you were on exactly the right dose.

Hi

Metformin reduced from 4 x 500g tabs per day to 2 as they felt a score of 5.8 was too low!

As I'm a bit more enlightened now, as I found this forum just after; & I have what I consider to be high levels in the morning (I spot check as I provide my own test strips). I will be querying the amount of metformin & when I take it.

I recently completed an Aspirin study trial & the doc who checked me out to see that I was fit to take part suggested it may be that levels are high due to when I take my tabs.

So this week(since it won't effect blood tests) I'm going to take it when I go to bed rather than with my eve meal to see if any changes to my morning levels. (Normally anything from 7.4 to 8.8!). The night before they tend to be 1 to 2 points lower. Last Thursday I was 6.4 when I went to bed (no/low carb meal as I had an omlette, bit of cheese in it & nothing else) I was 7.4 in the morning. Then last night had a few chips and was yes 7.4 this morning.

I'm debating trying 2 metformin with my evening meal which is the dose I used to have when my level was 5.8. Appointment with DN at GP clinic on 9th July when results in. So hopefully I should also know whether fasting levels improved with 2 tabs not 1. If it is I will be asking (depending on results) whether to keep to current meds (but take both tabs with eve meal) or go to 3 tabs & have 1 with brekkie & the other 2 with main meal. Why can't life be more straight forward?

:D:D:D

Well bearing in mind Met doesn't act directly on food (they say take it with/before food as I think the gastric effects are lessened) and what you are actually doing once you are 'soaked' in Met, is to just keep it topped up all the while, if you are taking 2 I would have thought morning and evening?

I'll guess at 6.4 🙂

hope you are happy with your results x

Thanks trophywench.

I had no idea apart from with food can be kinder on the tum. Thankfully I haven't had much problem since the first couple of days so I can "stomach" it witout food.

I wonder why the doc running the diabetes study suggested my high fasting levels (8.3 that day) may be a matter of timing. Possibly the time the fasting test is done rather than when I take my meds?

I'll see what the DN at the GP practise says on the 9th.

Your high fasting levels look like a classic case of the Dawn Phenomenon (DP) and nothing to do with Met or when you take it.
There is a massive literature on the DP and how to tackle it if you just google it.
Rick Mendosa (a major T2 guru blogger) has dealt a lot with it on his pages.
The usual recommended antidote, to fool the body into thinking its got available glucose at dawn, is a protein snack before bed although other experiments have been tried e.g. A green apple before bed .

And the scores are

HBA1c: 6.0% not sure how that happened, convinced it would be higher. (Last test in Feb must have picked up the last stages of a tooth infection)

Colesterol down slightly to 3.4 yipee

Kidneys & liver normal.

So all I need to do is get a grip on my fasting levels and I'll be a really happy bunny.

Take care, have a good afternoon.
