Hi 8 weeks ago I was tested and had a reading of 49. I’ve been offered great help and advice on this message site, so many thanks.
It’s 8 weeks since my original test. I have arranged a new one for this Friday so 8 weeks since original.
I’ve lost approx 18lbs in that time.
Simple question is it too soon for second test and what are my chances of reduced levels

It is normal to have a retest 3 months after the first as it reflects the glucose attached to the red blood cells which have a life of approximately 3 months although the test is weighted towards the more recent weeks.
You should show a reduction in blood glucose if the measures you have taken are working, if there is no or little change then maybe you need to tighten up on your diet.

I’m assuming as I’ve lost the 18lb that diet is going ok. Carbs limited to approx 80 per day max.
I am just concerned it’s only 8 weeks !!

It sounds as if you are on the right track and the test will hopefully confirm it.

I'd hope whoever looks at the results will understand that the tests are only 8 weeks apart. As I understand it the more recent times have more influence on the HbA1c results, so even a couple of months will give a useful indicator.

My Dr will be looking but he suggested it was unlikely I’d be able to change them.
No idea why but I don’t think Xmas will help thus getting done now.
Not that I intend hugely changing diet over the break

Who requested the test be done at 8 weeks, did the GP ask for that or did you request it? Perhaps you could change the timing to move it back a bit to January since you’re concerned?

It should show a reduction but an a1c wouldn’t normally be repeated after 8 weeks unless the first one was very high or something.

Dr requested after 3 weeks.
All been very confusing. I think I will just go ahead on Friday.
Surely worst that happens is I just check again in further 12 weeks

How was the a1c you had after 3 weeks? That one could have been to confirm the diagnosis if you didn’t have symptoms.

In some GP Practices they test at 6-8 weeks post-diagnosis. They believe that can help demonstrate the direction of travel in blood glucose averages, and can help boost morale for the patient.

Good luck with your test.

If the HbA1c is borderline and the patient is not symptomatic then I believe a second HbA1c is performed before they are formally diagnosed. This is usually within the 3 month HbA1c guideline for a repeat.

I believe the OP cancelled that blood test to give themselves a bit more time to make adjustments and push levels down through lifestyle changes.

@March I think there is a very good liklyhood that you will have reduced it below the diagnostic level in this timescale given the fantastic weight loss and carb reduction you have achieved. Unfortunately many doctors don't have much understanding of how powerful a low carb diet and weight loss can be in pushing diabetes into remission. That is partly because their own depressive opinion is demotivating for many people, but also because many people sadly do not want to change and some do not get appropriate advice to change. Thankfully you have found this forum where the advice is tried and tested and works for many people. I have every confidence you will be one of them.
Do let us know what your result is so that we can all support you.

good luck @March and congratulations on the amazing weight loss well done

I needed to send a huge thank you to the numerous people who replied and offered me advise and encouragement
10 weeks ago I came on the forum having just been advised by Dr that I was type 2 diabetic with an hbac1 of 49. My Dr suggested I would not change this with diet and exercise. I do not know why he advised this.
You guys offered support and advice which I followed. Low carb 80g per day calories of 800 weekdays 1000 weekends. Walking one way or another 10.000 steps with more at weekends. I lost 1 1/2 stone and my recent blood test for HBA1C was 41.

Thankyou so much for the help and advice. Anyone new to this should listen and follow best path for them.

I realise my lifestyle needs to continue in the current way, albeit went a little wrong over Xmas I shall continue and hopefully find a positive way forward.

Thanks to everyone of you that helped me.

Happy New Year and I wish you all the best in your own way forward

Well done, and thanks for posting. It will be great encouragement for all those trying to help themselves through lifestyle changes.

Many congratulations! That is a really great result, both the weight loss and HbA1c reduction. I hope your doctor was suitably impressed and gave you a big pat on the back because you definitely deserve it.
Very best of luck with maintaining that success.
