It's mainly to do with the Data Protection Act 1998 that mugs like myself cannot give results over the phone. We have to have a set of data points that whoever we have to phone results to must give us or we cannot provide the results. Much the same for faxing out results from labs in which the tests are done (my spare time from uni is composed of doing HbA1C's in my local pathology lab). It's a possibility that you may have to have another test done if the sample didn't get to the lab in the appropriate condition (which is hard to do).
Oh, I just ring up and am told the results! Well, usually that is what happens for cholesterol and thyroid, waiting for results for my first follow up HbA1c
