I've just come back from the Nurse getting my Hba1c results and it has gone up slightly from 6.9 6 months ago to 7.2. The nurse was ready to offer me metformin but i asked if i could give it one last shot in the next 6 months to lose as much weight as possible and she thought it was a good idea. Everything else (BP, cholesterol) is OK. Overall, I am not too disappointed as i thought it had gone up a lot higher so back to basics now.

I am also thinking about going on the 5:2 after 'chatting' to a friend on Facebook last night, she got her BS levels lowered within 6 weeks of the 'diet'. I have nothing to lose i suppose! (apart from weight 🙂

My wife has some friends who use the 5:2 diet very successfully. The only thing I would suggest is that on the two days you keep any eye on your BS readings and have some dextrose with you, just in case of a hypo. It can happen even with type 2.

Best of luck.

Hi Carina,
I think its good you pushed back on the nurse, as opposed to just accepting what she said 🙂. Not to sound too cynical or anything but I sometimes find that HCPs are just following protocol so its good to challenge them every once in a while (within reason of course). You know yourself better than anyone else does (not very a profound statement, I know!). Good luck with the 5:2 diet 😉

I would think hypos would be extremely unlikely without any medication at all - though I think non-D people can get them with extreme exercise (marathons etc)

Best of luck on 5:2 Carina - let us know how you get on!

It doesn't necessarily take *extreme* exercise - I am non-D but do get hypos. Usually from long intervals between eating, but a few months back I felt really shaky getting out of the swimming pool after not many lengths, tested on my son's meter and was 3.4.

Interesting Redkite, thanks for that!
