I just got my annual review results. My hba1c has dropped from 40 to 38. They said that the preferred range for diabetics is 48 to 58. So I'm unsure if too low is an issue?

no its not an issue it just means your doing a great job in managing this disease , what medication are you on ?

I’m on low doses on insulin and 2x500 metformin and my hbac1 is now around 33. My diabetes nurse was really pleased it had gone to to 36 in May, and she put me on metformin to reduce my insulin requirements. Basal from 14 to 6 (going to reduce to 4) and rapid from 12 to 4-6. She didn’t say anything about going too low

your doing a great job of managing and 38 is not anything to worry about !!

Your HbA1c is in the normal range - so why anyone would 'prefer' you to have higher numbers doesn't really make sense.

They might take you off them or lower the dose and see what happens.

When my hba1c got to normal my metformin was halved and then stopped when hba1c stayed normal.

Lucky you!! I am preparing for my annual 'battle' to have the metformin reduced down to two Sigh. However, the risk averse HCP has retired so the new one might be bolder.

It must be your choice, if my A1c was as low as yours I would reduce meds and monitor with daily finger pricks if my average went back up I would increase the meds again.

Daily finger will only show me if the meal is too carby or not. Averages of them and Hba1c can vary.

I do not have a medical background so making those changes to my dosage is something I wouldn't be comfortable doing. The metformin issue is only a mild irratation and bemusement.

@Funnyday your obviously doing a great job of managing your control, I’m sure your GP will want to maybe look at reducing your meds

Prior to the HbA1c test you would have had a fasting blood test - similar to a morning finger prick be it more accurate - if you did a daily average and kept an eye on it I personally would be happy doing that.

The nurse's attitude was 'we don't like people taking medication if they don't need it.'

They just stopped it without telling me!

I have learnt it is all so random. I pick my battles and this is one i will simply nag away at.

No one is coming round forcing the tablets into you. If you’ve decided dropping to two is what you want to do then just tell the HCP that’s what you’ve decided.

I agree with @Lucyr.
My GP surgery just 'offer' medication, and explain why. If I say no, they leave it at that.
