my HBa1c came back and has gone down again but what seems strange is that the random is up over 10. if this is the case then how can the HBa1c be down this doesn't seem to make any sense.

i have done my own readings and the BG all ways seems to be over 10. don't think i have hardly had any good BG reading since been diagnosed apart from when i was using insulin and had some hypo's

has anyone else had the same sort of reading or any explanations as to what might be going on. i went from 73 to 65 then to 55.

Have you been checked for anaemia? I seem to remember this can affect results.

I think it raises HbA1c rather than lowering it? For someone with T1 I think I'd guess overnight hypos or something. It's possible to be unlucky when measuring BG, so it could just be over 10 when you happen to measure.

Don't worry Sue I got the same reaction when I said the same thing to someone else, this is from a document stapped all over with NHS

• A cause of low HbA1c – Drugs – Haemolytic anaemia – G6PD deficiency
xx

Yes, you're right.

Thanks 🙂 Must admit to not remembering which way it goes but did remember it messed up the results somewhere along the lines.

Yes, apparently iron deficiency anaemia tends to increase it, haemolytic anaemia decreases it. (I'd only heard of the first.)

(Anything that can decrease the lifetime of red blood cells could decrease HbA1c. http://www.ngsp.org/factors.asp suggests a few (recovery from severe blood loss, for example).)

I have anaemia HbA1c was very low currently at 32, still have it but BGL`s
are always within spec or lower, red blood cells are always slightly low.

Iron tablets didn`t do didly squat checking for other reason, Bruce may be right.

Is that a true "random"?
Before food, after exercise.......

Just wondering the same @travellor - was the ‘random’ just a fingerstick taken when you had the bloods drawn?

What time of day was that? After breakfast maybe?

no the random is done as part of the HBa1c test.

since this message it has now been passed back to our main diabetic nurse. the person who came today feels though it may be part of what has been found lurking inside me.

something is knocking up the BG levels but hba1c is dropping which is why things aren't making sense at the moment -
