Today i got my hba1c for the last 3 months i was gutted when i was told it was 10, i was in hospital in january due to having a very infected arm and my blood sugars were sky high for 2 weeks, would this of had a major impact on my hba1c?? My nurse is not very happy at all, i do find her rude an unhelpful and hard to talk too,,,,:(

Hi Scotty, sorry to hear about the HbA1c :( What was your last one like? It doesn't help when the nurse is a poor communicator. Certainly, I would have thought the infection would have made an impact, as there was no doubt a period of raised levels priot to it becoming apparent, then getting treated and recovering from it. Your day to day levels tend to have a bigger influence on your HbA1c than the earlier ones in the three month cycle.

What advice did she give you? Anything worth trying, or did she just tell you to try harder?

Hi northerner my last one was 7.8 which I was happy with 10 is a bit high, she just told me to record blood sugar reading which I already do and adjust insulin accordingly and basically I see you in 6 months time

A telling off for something out of your control is really unhelpful! 😡 And to top it off, you have to wait another 6 months... if your DSN was really that concerned, surely you would have been checked again in 3 months? Oh well, all you can do is carry on doing what you know works for you and keep smiling. 🙂

Are there any particular times of day that you have a problem with? Do you have any software for you meter that might help you to spot trends and highlight areas you might want to concentrate on? For example, if you are generally high in the morning, you might want to look at your levemir and see if the dose is sufficient. Perhaps if you could let us know a typical day's food, insulin doses and readings we could help with some suggestions?

Sorry to hear about your levels, I think the infection probably won't have helped matters.

And your nurse should be helpful, it's her job!!!

Well the last 4 weeks back have the most impact on the A1c result, then the next 4 weeks back etc.

So if you had the blood taken a week ago, that's a fortnight in February and a fortnight in January, then Jan and Dec, then Dec and Nov.

So the arm was smack bang up 'this' end of your blood test. And madam is being utterly unrealistic because the arm would have shot your BG up one heck of a lot if it was bad enough to be in hospital.

What was your BG control like whilst your arm was still infected and who was controlling your BG - you or did they have you on a sliding scale? If you - did you have good abvice from the Diabetes specialist team whilst you were in, on how to adjust your dosages to compensate for the infection?

And is it completely over and done with even now?
