Morning everyone,

After a week of being on Metformin I seem to be having severe problems with my eyesight. My ability to read small print or texts is almost zero.My partner has read online that high blood sugar can cause issues with eyesight has anyone else had this problem as it seems my eyesight has become poor almost overnight

Yep when I was diagnosed and started metformin my near vision went bad but it has improved back to normal after a couple of weeks, I read on here that its something to do with the fluids in and around the eyes getting used to the less spare sugar in our systems, it seems to be something that happens but were not told about and came as a shock to me and others. You could talk to a doc about it or an optician if you need reassurance or it gets worse.
I'm sure someone will be along soon to explain it better

Yes, I had similar problem when I reduced my carb intake to 70g per day (no metformin) and my near vision went awful.
It happens to some people as the environment in the eye changes from being 'sugary' which probably happened slowly so you didn't notice but as it returns to more 'salty' the shape of the eye changes so it alters the focus.
It can take a while for it to return to normal, if you do go to the optician tell them you are newly diagnosed diabetic, they should not be advising you to get expensive glasses immediately.
It may take from weeks to months to return to normal.
I did not realise it might happen and it was only because of something I read on here that I found out and in hindsight I should have reduced my carb intake more gradually.

Many of us invested in a pair or two of "ready reader" glasses from the pound shop to tide us over the period of adjustment, but as described above the glucose concentration changes the shape of the lens in the eyes and hence the focal length. This happens very slowly as you develop diabetes so your eye muscles adjust without you being aware of it but the reversal of glucose concentration can happen quite suddenly with dietary changes particularly but medication will contribute too, and it takes time for the eyes to readjust to the new focal length. Usually 2-3 months is common.

yep, it is totally hindering my gaming performance too.

Didn't think of getting some cheap reading glasses, probs not in town again for a while but will keep an eye out for some (if I can still see anything haha).

Hope your eyes settle down soon @greg75

If things don’t seem to settle, or if it is taking a while to get back to normal and you begin to get worried, do go back to your optician or Dr, to get things checked out

I've now made do with Poundland reading glasses as can't see small print at all now. Will talk to my GP tomorrow about next step.

As it has been said, a rapid change in BG levels will affect your eyesight but this should go away once your eyes have readjusted to having more normal BG levels

So my GP advised me to go to Eye Casualty today.I went and after a series of tests concluded that there was medically nothing wrong. However I will now go to diabetic eye test and opticians but is the diabetic screening likely to pick anything up if hospital tests found nothing?

The diabetic eye screening takes photographs of the back of the eye to check for retinopathy but does not check for eyesight or anything else like cataracts. You do not get the results straight away as they have to be assessed by a specialist who is not usually the person taking the pictures.

Your GP obviously doesn't deal with diabetes who are changing their blood glucose levels for the better - it isn't as though there are no reports of exactly what you are experiencing. 🙄
