Once you have had a diabetes diagnosis the yes you will always be diabetic however if you have 2 consecutive HbA1C results under 48mmol/mol without medication then you could be regarded as being in remission.

As Leadinglights has said, once you've been diagnosed - you're considered to have diabetes for the rest of your life, however remission is possible with some lifestyle changes. There's a whole forum section dedicated to that, so feel free to read about it if that's something that you'd be interested in or, alternatively, you can read more about it here.

Yes.
A T2 diagnosis is for life. (*)
Even if the diagnosis is changed to ‘in remission’ the original diagnosis remains as the symptoms can return. (It can’t in your case as you’re taking drugs)

That’s excellent progress though, well done!

(*) unless temporary due to medication such as steroids, in which case ‘resolved’ is used, but for normal T2s remission is correct code as it means monitoring continues

Yes, technically you do if you’re still on diabetes medication, even if your numbers are well-controlled. But the great news is that you're managing it really well, and that's what truly matters. Some people refer to this as being in remission, especially if their readings stay in the normal range over time. btw congratulations.

Well done in getting your hbA1c to 40 @philwhite . Give yourself a pat on the back. Unfortunately as others have said you will always have diabetes. Even if you come off medication in the future and go into remission, you will still receive eyesight and feet checks regularly and annual HbA1c tests.

How you class yourself is a different question from how your GP records class you!

Look it this way:

If I were you, I'd prefer to be in the mid-normal range without medication in the long term, HbA1C in the mid-30s.

I found losing enough weight to get back into to the j jeans I once wore and then keeping my weight down was the big challenge. Looking back it was not so hard.

I should have taken more time and maintained muscle as I went along.

My excursion into the three figure diabetes zone is a constant reminder of why I am still classed as diabetic - with 6 monthly/annual HbA1c tests to monitor my condition.
