Have I been reading my sugar intake wrong ?

Hi everyone,
okay I'm worried I have been reading the nutrition on the labels wrong. For example per 100g if the label says carbohydrate 67.4g of which sugars 3.6g.
Is my sugar intake for that amount 3.6g. Or is there more to add.

You've got the sugar right but you need to take the total carbs into account as that is what affects your blood sugar levels.
 
Morning @Scotia. It's just the total carbohydrate figure per 100g x portion size in grammes/100
 
Hi @Scotia . Ignore the of which are sugars, just take note of the amount of carbs as the sugar content is already included in the total carbs.
 
You are right, @Scotia, that if you eat 100g of that product, you will consume 3.6g sugar. However, you will also consume a total of 67.4g carbohydrate, made up of 63.8g non sugar CHO and 3.6g sugar. To confuse the matter further, the portion size might be smaller or larger than 100g. It's often OK to round up or down to nearest 1g CHO, rather than worrying about 0.1g.

As the above plus you'll have to test - eat - test to see what it does to your sugar levels too.

Often it's stated, along with the weight of the item eg per 32g biscuit.

It's a random number the factory writes on the label. I've seen a 50 g portion size on a 150 g bag of precut salad, or a portion of 20g of a 100 g chocolate bar.
And of course you have the real portion size, that is what you're actually eating.
 
Can I ask please if there are guidelines written down somewhere as to what is a healthy amount of carbohydrates to have in a day. Learning all this to help my husband with his diabetes and he doesn't have an appointment for blood check/advice for 2 weeks now. If there is a chart somewhere I can download that anyone knows of that would be really good. Thanks Sue
