This forum is great, I do have one suggestion though. Something for the mods or powers that be. Would it be possible for 3 new boards. Women's, Men's and complications. While we all try to avoid complications a lot of us do have them and it would be nice to be able to post somewhere less general than the general board. The same goes for mens and womens stuff. There are specific difficulties with diabetes for both men and women, It would be nicer than having post in general with the warning look away men or look away women lol. There are a few times i would have liked advice or somewhere to bat about ideas about 'women's stuff' but have felt uncomfortable about posting it in general. Anyway i will just leave this here for the gods of the diabetes forum to think about 🙂 thanks

I'm not sure that would give anymore more privacy CosmicHedgehog...anyone would be free to view the boards...read the posts...I'm sure most of our members here are sensitive enough to respect sensitive issues.

Yes i see where you are coming from, obviously anyone could view the boards. I guess i mean it in the way that its somewhere specific to have those type of discussions. It can be avoided by people if wanted. I would probably not frequent the Mens board for example. Some things can be very sensitive with men and women with diabetes and it would be nice if men and women were able to support each other with difficult things / compare notes etc without it being in general. I am a classic example that i am currently struggling with something that is specific to women with diabetes and this idea came about as i was going to write a post and thought better of it due to the general nature of the general board. obv men could look at the women's board but i guess it's like where you would choose to air your laundry lol

I think that's very sensible! I've had to stick on a warning for men to look away too about a recent post! Also, since I don't want to read the men's forum, if there is going to be one, I can mark that forum read. So, I won't get any updates when I catch up on "New Posts". The men can do the same, if they want!

Thinking about this, and wondering if the Pregnancy board could be adapted to cover women and their hormonal problems? I guess both puberty and the menopause probably bring their own challenges for diabetic women, please correct me if I am wrong.

We do try and avoid introducing new message boards to the forum unless they are seen as absolutely necessary. One of the disadvantages of having more narrowly-defined topic-specific boards is that some people who may be able to help might never read them, and also people can be unsure if what they are wanting to post fits the specifics closely enough. I think as long as the title of threads is descriptive enough it's better to place them where a majority of other members will encounter them and choose whether to read/respond or not. This doesn't mean we are not open to suggestions though, and this will be carefully considered 🙂

I can tell you now if there was a men specific part of the forum to do with diabetes there wouldn't be one post on it. 🙄

Okay 🙂 Well it was just an idea. Maybe something could be adapted maybe just a complications board. I think it's important that Complications both womens and mens and the gender neutral ones need to be talked about. There is a habit of making them a bit taboo in the diabetes community. Its all a bit hush hush and embarrassment. There's a lot of us out there with them. It's all about the good the bad and the ugly with diabetes. I would think its just as important as having an off the subject board if not way more important. After all this is a diabetes forum. peripheral and autonomic Neuropathy, feet, eyes, gastroparesis, Erectile dysfunction, Diabetic mastopathy, Vaginal issues, Periods and blood sugars, Hormones, Thrush, Infections, heart disease, Kidney damage, stroke, eating disorders....... But to name a few. I'm not trying to cause waves. It would just be nice if diabetes uk recognised these and more as a part of lots of diabetics lives. #talkaboutcomplications Please take this to the powers that be. I'm sure a complications board would be widely recognised among users of the forumas a place to put all kinds of complication posts queries and support. Thanks 🙂

I see no reason for men not being sensitive to female probs and vice versa. Many people have relationships with either, both, or transgender others. The forum needs to be mutually INclusive.
I agree trophy actually. I think you are right. I have change the idea (post above)

Part of me understands where you are going with this, but... On the other hand,I grew up with 2 older sisters and have been married long enough that not much fazes me. So unless you are going to ban all men from the women's board, it's not going to stop some looking in to see if they can help.

I can tell you now if there was a men specific part of the forum to do with diabetes there wouldn't be one post on it. 🙄
Yep, have to agree there!

I agree, one on complications, not gender specific would be better.

Well a lot of ailments aren't complications - eg menstruation isn't BUT it affects how much insulin women need. Ditto puberty for both sexes and the menopause, or having any type of medical procedure for any reason for any gender.

I quite like that complications tend to get discussed along with any other appointments at the moment - eg when people have extra checkups, eye lasering, questions about sensation and neuropathy etc. It’s just what is going on with them, rather than something separately ‘a complication’. Sometimes threads start when people just have a question, rather than something confirmed and treatable too.

I guess it’s a personal thing. And I’m sure DUK will consider the potential benefits of a separate section carefully. It may even be something they were already considering!

Hi @CosmicHedgehog - thank you for starting this discussion and making some very valid suggestions. As @Northerner mentioned, it can be helpful to limit the number of topics. We find that simplicity works well and can generate more open and wider discussions, or allowing posts about multiple issues, without the need to pinpoint a category. But, we do also want people to feel able to raise topics that they wish to talk about, and to feel comfortable in doing so. Perhaps for some, a complications board is something that would help offer reassure that this is something to talk about and that there is a safe place where they can discuss complications or other sensitive issues. So yes, something for us to explore.

Your point regarding Male and Female boards again, raises some good questions. There are a number of sensitive issues that people may wish to ask about - but perhaps do not feel that the General Message board is the place to ask. So perhaps there is a need for a place or board or something else, to ask those more sensitive or private questions? There may be a number of solutions to this question, but maybe the best solution is something that is influenced and shaped by you all. So thanks all for your input and please feel free to offer any more suggestions or viewpoints on the suggestion. 🙂
