Has using a Foley urinary catheter given anyone high blood glucose levels?

Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I have had insulin dependent type 1 diabetes for 41 years and I am pretty well managed, with HbA1 between 6 and 6.5%.
I use insulins Aspart and Degludec.

I have been using a Foley (indwelling) urinary catheter for circa 4 weeks now. The first time I started to use it, I had high blood glucose readings for a few days. After a while it started to go back to normal. Today I had to replace it, for hygienic reasons, and again my readings are soaring. Is it possible that the body behaves like there was some kind of infection? It is hard to find this kind of information in the Web,
and doctors will loosely mention something about an infection, although I have no symptoms at all. I wanted to know if any other
diabetics have had a similar reaction to urinary catheters.

Hi @gorodski and welcome to the forum.

Sorry I can't help with your question, but hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on it.

Alan 😉

Urinary catheters do sometimes cause a UTI and that may cause elevated blood glucose. With a catheter you may not be as aware of the symptoms of a UTI as someone without might.
Do you have any urine dip sticks as you could check for elevated leucocytes or blood which would indicate an infection.
Do you have the support of a community catheter nurse as you could speak to them and check.
