Caravanning in the middle of a field 5 miles from anywhere and hubby decides - being very kind - to hard boil some eggs for salad later in the day. Great idea until I went to do dinner last night. Guess where he had put the hot eggs? Right on top of ALL my insulin (except current in use pens) on the top shelf in the fridge door. Reason - he had always put them there and last year I was not on insulin when caravanning so how was he to know!! Panic phone call to GP surgery where we had registered and I can pick up fresh supplies this afternoon. So no lunch for me - or rather no carbs in my lunch but did have enough for breakfast left in pen. Levimir was ok for 3 days.
Was I right to panic so? The eggs would have been almost too hot to handle and were literally on top of the cartridges as I had taken them out of the boxes to get them all in the tray. I was worried enough about the high temperatures recently and made sure my pens were in the shade and cool side of the van as much as possible. What exactly happens to the insulin if too hot - does it make your bs go up or down because of not working properly?
