Handy hints and tips

This is one habit I cannot adjust to! I grew up with 3 older brothers so it was survival of the quickest! Even now, I live alone, and still stuff food down. I really have to concentrate to remind myself to chew and eat slowly. It is harder than you think.

All these plans presume a person has actual meals. What about us weirdos who've never eaten properly in their lives? 🙄 On that bariatric course I was offered the lady said "eat normally" so that was the end of that. What does eating normally mean?

normal means starvation diet to one and overeating to another.
Low carb can be very little carbs to quite a lot.
No baby comes out sane size or shape as another. No one has the same intelligence or lack off as another. My meaning is we are all unique
No one is normal? As you say what is that. Life throws us some hard times. We need to get through the best we can. So I do what
i want. Try when i can and stop beating myself when i cant . Pity i feel most days whats the point anymore. So just get by. Normal or not we all just exist.
 
A bit of newb and havnt read all the pages. Briefly again had a bad stroke few years ago immediately before stroke I was very fit, confirmed by the unending tests for the 2 or 3 months I was in . Went home besieged by local nursing .
Who were clearly giving me bog standard info. Lucky enough ( at the time ) to be able to work with a quite radical Nuero physio . He was very holistic not only physio, mental health diet. I’m fully functional now albeit a bit slower now.
Prior to stroke I did a lot of walking, to work etc .
I have very little time for NHS advice.
Eventually to the point. When I was abruptly told I had early stages of type 2 I freaked frankly if it wasn’t for this forum I’d still be in the dark .
I’m overweight I’m your average bloke late middle age , with what I used to call a beer gut except I’ve been teetotal for decades.
Put weight on mainly because I will never manage those regular long walks again. Also pre diabetes diagnosis I thought I was on a healthy diet but I was eating the wrong granola , eating brown bread but the wrong one and so on.
Surprisingly because of this forum I’m pretty good at reading food labels I’m not going to start adding up carbs yet but the food I’m eating is radically different . Same foods but better ratings , kicked chips etc into touch, no snacks and still do this short bursts of stroke recovery related exercises which as I progress are more regular.
So changed my eating, am increasing exercise . I think it’s inevitable I will start losing weight. It’s only two months so not expecting any massive changes yet.
The one my physio drummed into me is exercise isn’t just the obvious. Housework is a great exercise particularly for me as it helps with balance ability . Gardening again moving into different positions not just the repetitive jogging gym type exercises. In two months I’ve gone from 85.3 kg to 84.6 I guess that’s the right direction.
I’ve been told to ignore BMI as it’s a sort of token guide as has been mentioned everyone’s different .
I was relatively muscular before the stroke and have maintained core strength so my optimum weight is apparently higher than other people .
Right a long post but I’m particularly going to be following this thread with interest.
 
Hi, Some great tips there. I have just signed up with the NHS weight loss scheme. My weight has crept up since getting better control of my blood sugars. Im disabled so struggle with exercise. I dont like fruit/nuts or most healthy snacking options.Would like to lose about 3 stone 😱 Chocolate and biscuits are my downfall, especially in the evening. I try limiting what I buy butI find it difficult with others in the house wanting sweet stuff. Im trying Yoga as its quite versatile and gentle. Its all very frustrating though. How do people stay positive?

I don’t always . The best thing I find is if i go with the best bits and try n get through the bad. A little at s time. Do not be hard on yourself others do that for us.
Be proud of any achievement for some it is but a dream.
 
Never see this as a diet its a new lifesytle choice you have made and no one is tell you you cant eat certain food but its a simple you dont eat certain food the way you word things make a huge difference
and labels read the labels there is so much out there now i have found a pizza half baked portion 20g carbs read and reserch
Ask questions if you don't know ask or look it up don't go in blind so many people hear who can help and advice on lots of things. As most say when they get told by a nurse don't do that don't eat that on your way
 
My tip: remove temptation & don't shop when hungry! 😱

For anyone like me... I have to make sure I don't buy any 'naughties' - even as hypo treats, otherwise I will just wolf my way through them! 😱 I also am now trying to make a list and shop when not hungry...as well as hopefully losing lb's I should save a few ?'s by not impulse buying lol! 😛
What you say is so important: I can resist anything except temptation :(
 
Welcome @bf89uk Why not just copy and paste your diet here? People will be nervous about clicking on a link like that. You can talk about your diet and blood sugar here 🙂
... and your "fitness journey", given that it can't only be what (and how much) we eat if we're serious about making significant changes.

The blog also doubles as a way for me to document my own progress and journey, so it's a personal project rather than a commercial one.

It's assumed everyone is overweight and unfit, such a misconception by many.
I don't assume anyone is overweight or unfit other than myself; however, as this was promoted as a non-judgemental safe space, I thought there may be others out there who have been in a similar position and maybe able to offer support.

My diet is not dissimilar to yours, except I do have moments of weakness which I thoroughly enjoy at the time :D.
Do you cook your curries from scratch? Its the only way to control content. many ready meals regarding curry do have very high carb content. Check total carbs on back of purchases.

If you check out DUK meal pages you may spot some more good things to eat. Enjoy 🙂

I'd been told for a long time that ready meals weren't that great for you, but it wasn't until I took the time to read the packaging that it made me truly understand just how bad they are. I've got into the habit of checking the labels on pretty much everything I eat or drink, and if I cant pronounce it, or don't know what it is, I don't buy it. Switching to whole foods has made such a difference - weight, skin, blood sugar levels, energy, sleep, etc.

My housemate and I take it in turns to cook, and I'm very fortunate that he's very supportive and also likes to eat 'clean' and make most things from scratch.
