Type 1
Hi everyone.

I'm recently diagnosed as type 1. I was taken into hospital with Ketoacidosis as I had no idea I was diabetic at all.

For the past few weeks, I had noticed more than average hair in the bath, on my hairbrush, when I was hoovering etc but since I've been out of hospital and home, it's increased so much so that I can run my hands through my hair and after a while end up with a ball of hair in my hands as if you've just cleaned your hairbrush out.

I've always had thick, lovely hair, it's the one thing I've never had to worry about but this is really upsetting and worrying me. Is this normal ? Will it last ?

Bonnie

Sorry to hear that you're having this problem bonnie. Are you feeling stressed out at all ?

No more than usual lol !!

I just wondered if it was diabetes related ??

I know from friends that have been on diets that make you produce ketones in the past they have had hair loss, so I just wondered if there is a direct link ?

Hi Bonnie,
fear not your hair will normalize once your diabetes settles down and your blood sugars are more controlled.
Other problems could be under active thyroid and sometimes anemia.
So if at all concerned do ask your health care team.

PS, welcome to the forum 🙂

Bonnie hi and a warm welcome to the forum, I suffered with this issue a while ago clumps of hair were coming out at an alarming rate, my reason was stress though so it stopped once I began chilling

Hi B. this also happened to me after I was diagnosed with Dka. It took a few months to settle down. My gp said it was a result of hair follicles dying when I was so ill but she also checked my thyroid with a blood test and that was fine.

Hi Bonnie.

I've been losing a lot of hair of late but mine is down to stress of work & my grandad dying.

Sadly it's not getting any better so I know how worrying it is

I lost a lot of hair around the time I was diagnosed, so much that I had it cut off short. I think it was due to hypoactive thyroid, which was diagnosed shortly after. They're both autoimmune conditions and tend to go hand in hand. Do ask your Dr for tests.

I had the same a few months ago- loads of my hair was felling out. It turned out my levels were really high & I was going through a stressful time. I was put on gliclazide to help & my hair loss slowed. My hair is now growing back- phew! I hope it sorts itself out for you soon.
Xx

Thanks everyone....

I've come to the conclusion today that theres nothing I can do about it. I will go to my doctors and have the thyroid test etc but in the mean time I'm going to try not to worry about it 🙂

Worrying can be a catch 22 situation as stress pushes up BGs which in turn exacerbate the problem. Do try to chill if you can and wait for results.

Have your sugars been badly controlled? I was hospitalized many times for DKA in my teens because I didn't control my sugars. Most of my hair fell out in clumps and didn't grow back till about 6 years later when I got my diabetes under control. It's been a very slow process.

Hi Bonnie my hair also thinned and fell out before I was diagnosed and after, this carried on until my sugars came down. My hair is fine now I don't remember it taking too long to come back cannot remember exactly because at that time, as you know your going through it, you have so much information to digest.....

Try not to worry, easier said than done I know ! lol 🙂

thanks everyone 🙂

My sugars have been a bit out of control as it seems I went undiagnosed for some time. I saw the diabetic nurses at the hospital today and they ordered some tests on my thyroid etc

My hair is still coming out so will have to wait and see what happens. I am lucky in that i do have very thick hair so hoping it wont notice too much.

Thanks for all your advice 🙂

Hi Bonnie,

I think that's the best thing you can do at this point, it will come back I'm sure. I lost a lot of hair in my first term of University, probably due to stress, and also had really long thick hair which I never worried about. 2 years down the line and I've only just been diagnosed with Type I as well so I'm sure I will be losing hair again at some point becuase it's such a stressful time!! My hair slowly has started to look healthier and longer in the past year, I had a keratin hair treatment about 4 months after I really noticed it thinning and people saying I'd cut my hair when I hadn't!! I also now use a simple kerastase protein leave in treatment once a week to try and make it stronger!!

Hope this was of some help.

Take care,

Jemma

Thanks everyone....

My daughters hair didn't seem to grow for ages after she was dx, and it is also a symptom of thyroid problems too as I well know! It's good they are checking this out as well.
Best of luck 🙂
