We were viewing houses and it must have been a mix of it being that time of month and the fact i was doing a lot walking and a late dinner but my blood sugar dropped to 4.1 and so i had two jelly babies and a few crisps but i started getting soooo shakey just shivering from head to foot, my heart was pounding in my chest and i was weaving all over the place, checked it again and it was 3.5. The hubby dragged me into pizza hut only thing closest too us (even though i was trying to be stubborn and go view another house i did listen to him) where i managed to get my sugar level up.

Luckily its not too high or too low at the moment but its really freaked me and the hubby out how quick it dropped and he's keeping a close eye on me cause i've felt a little light headed since.

gone from one extreme to the other with my blood sugars :(

A quick drop will always feel much worse than a slow one, and it does sound like you were dropping fairly quickly after still falling after treating the 4.1 - but you handled it well. I totally understand about the irrationality of wanting to view the next house rather than treating the hypo, par for the course! 🙂

Congrats (sort of) on your first hypo.

It'll probably be because of the walking.

You did well with the jelly babies. Something like proper coke or lucozade is even better if you can carry some.

The crisps aren't a good idea straight away since the fat will slow down absorption of the sugar. Best to have quick acting, wait 10 to 15 mins, then retest and treat again if still hypo. If above about 4.5, you can then go for the longer acting if you're going to be walking again. But best to sit still for a good 10 mins longer.🙂

the good thing is that you had your hubby with you 🙂

I can't even remember my first one, but I imagine you are now a lot better prepared for when it happens again, and just glad you had hubby there to help you through your first one 🙂

Good old fast food joints, any port in a storm and they ALL sell full-fat Coke!

I would blame the feelings of looking at houses, stress, excitement of picking the right one ! I do a quite manual job & its the "mental things" that make me low bg as well as work. Good luck 😉

Jelly babies are great - but you need to carry more than 2, although perhaps you did? Plus, carry an individually muesli bar or 2, something that can survive months (potentially) in a pocket of coat / rucksack / hand bag etc before being extracted and eaten - easier than finding a pizza place!

Usually, by the time I need my emergency muesli bar, it's been squashed flat, but wrapper is still intact and it's still edible 🙂

lol we didn't exactly find the pizza place it was just the closest we could get too lol. I didn't know how many to have to be honest.

Had another hypo today after walking AGAIN :/ luckily had a mars bar on hand and had a few bites of that to get it back up again but wasn't too worried today as it is my mums birthday so we were having a special 3 course meal and i knew i would be treating myself.

I'm having ALOT of problems with my legs at the moment, at the bottom the front of my leg running down my bone it is extremely painful when i lift the front of my foot its like its pulling on the muscle or something, didn't think it could be exercise cause i haven't been doing strenous work outs or anything. Going to the doctors tomorrow so hopefully will find out.

On a downer my doctors receptionist is being her useless self again, asked her this morning for repeat perscription for blood test strips quite urgent (already on system) and she said i couldnt get them till tomorrow. So ran out and just judging the best i can tonight.

Our pharmacist told me to always keep an unopened box of strips in the house and that they usually prescribe in lots of two or three boxes ...

It gave me the confidence to ask for multiples for G.

I'm now asking for multiple sharps boxes, multiple strips, multiple needles, multiple lancets ... I did get multiple insulin too, but fear I may end up chucking the levemir before it's used as her dose has just been reduced again and can't see us using it all before it's out of date.

I'm in Wales so it might be different, but shouldn't be ...

Good luck x

How many jelly babies to have? Well, you want to eat about 10 - 15g of sugar, wait 15 mins, test again, and if you need, have another 10 - 15g sugar. So, it depends on the size of your jelly babies. The packet will tell you g sugar in 100g of jelly babies. Then work out how many jelly babies are equivalent to 10 or 15g (decide which amount you want), and place that number of jelly babies into a small plastic bag - either thin plastic you can tear open or a small zip lock bag that you can open easily. It's important to wrap sweets, as they may spend weeks or months in a pocket before needing to be eaten - and you don't want to be faced with fluffy jelly babies! 🙂 Once you know, you don't have to calculate again, unless you change brands or size of jelly babies change.

I will admit to having hypos I've had to treat with fluffy, but without outside sugar coating, fruit pastilles ..... but not the best plan, I agree! :D

I've also eaten plenty of fluff, grit etc with sweeties - hence trying to prevent others having the same experience :D

Had ANOTHER hypo today and been diagnosed with a strain injury called shin splint its causing me AGONY!!!

In the space of an hour my sugar level has gone from 11 down to 6 and thats after tea :( Little bit concerned but just relaxing.

Poor you, I had shin splints when I was running lots and it wasn't fun. Best thing I did was hot baths and rub it with deep heat. And also try to avoid walking on hard surfaces, e.g. if you can walk on grass by the road do so. Rest it as much as you can

It is VERY painful but im taking painkillers atm and gonna get some deep heat tomorrow. Feeling all over th eplace with my sugar level my body feels exhausted :(

Definitely worth asking for referral to physiotherapist to treat shin splints - they can advise on exercises, footwear, use of painkillers, heat / cold etc. However, waiting lists for community physio are often weeks, so you need to ask GP (or whoever diagnosed shin splints) for a referral as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear about your shin splints and that you are feeling tired from the changing sugars. I hope that you feel much as they start to settle down.
