FOR hard-pressed NHS staff in Gwent, the days of searching row upon row of dusty files for patients? records is coming to an end.

But the process will take several years and involve one last monumental trawl through the medical histories of hundreds of thousands of people.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board is spending almost ?1million on an ambitious project to digitise health records, designed to tackle what is recognised as one of its biggest single risk issues.

A business unit on Newport?s Cleppa Park currently houses the aforementioned row upon row of dusty files, transferred from hospitals across Gwent, and also state-of-the-art scanning equipment with which the gargantuan task of copying the relevant records has just begun.
