Data from more than 2.6 million live births show a small but significant increase in risk for type 1 diabetes mellitus among children born by elective Caesarean delivery, but the risk appears to be related to familial factors, rather than mode of birth, investigators report.
Previous studies have suggested a link between delivery method and type 1 diabetes, and at first glance, the current analysis, published online August 4 in Pediatrics, appears to substantiate that finding.
