Hi,

I'm Martin. I'm a type 1 diabetic currently on MDI but due to start with a pump on the 16th of March! (Very excited as it has happened really quickly)

I was diagnosed in June 1999. Manged okay for the first 18 months but then things went to pot and I've been fighting to keep my blood sugars down ever since. I'm sure I was in denial for a number of years but I am determined to get on top of it!

I've made very slow progress with my HbA1c dropping very slightly to a now very unsatisfactory 9.4% Been dropping at a rate of 0.2% for the past few years despite carb counting and endless tweeking.

So yeah, signed up because I wish that there was somewhere like this 11 years ago and I think it is a fantastic idea :D

Welcome to the forum Martin, We have some members pumping so i am sure they will be able to help you out with any problems you have once you get going. Have you thought of a name for your pump yet?

Hi Martin!

That's really exciting that you're managing to get started on a pump. Which hospital are you under?

I see you're another Yorkie :D Just so you know, if you have a look under the Events section of the board, you'll see we're having a Forum meet in York on the 27th, if you're interested.

Best, Becky

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum, hope you and the pump have a long and loving friendship :D.

Hi Martin - welcome to the forum. I will be interested in knowing how you get on with your pump as I am getting one in a few months time too.

I'll certainly let you know how I get on with it. 8 days to go! :D

It wasn't too bad to be honest, but I kind of did it backwards. I decided in June last year that I wanted to discuss the option of a pump with my consultant at my next appointment in July. However, it was moved to feb this year which kind of annoyed me so I made an appointment to see my DSN and expressed my interest with her. They put me on a sensor first and then decided to up my lantus a bit. This caused hypo's on a daily basis so i reduced it again and expressed my concerns again and asked to be considered for a pump. Just before Christmas (3 appointments later) both my DSN and Dietician agreed that a pump should be considered. I finally saw my consultant in Jan after a brief paddy on my part with the receptionist to bring the appointment forward. He agreed that the pump should be an option provided I showed I was willing to put the effort in.

Went back to see my DSN last Thursday with a list of carbs, insulin doses and BG readings etc from the past few weeks and they agreed to a pump and gave me a VEO to take home and play with and a date to have it fitted on the 16th of March! Seems to me that it varies more than I realised! There wasn't a pump panel or anything, no waiting list. just my determination and recommendation from my consultant.
