Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there 🙂

My name is Chris (of the male variety), i'm 25, from London, living in North Yorkshire and not enjoying the cold weather too much (but the laid back way of life is worth staying for).

I have a love for films, football, playing badminton and photography.

I have also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (about 6 months ago), which was a bit of a blow really, though I have since learned about diabetes from the X-PERT course and that I can in fact eat anything (as part of a balanced diet etc etc).

My primary concern at the moment is that although I have been diagnosed with type 2, some have suggested I may be type 1.5/slow onset which I need to find out more about....I will post another thread shortly elsewhere asking for tips, advice very welcome!

Be seeing you!

hi there chris and welcome to the site, im due to start the X-PERT course on the 15th of jan was it good ?

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum🙂 It's not uncommon to be misdiagnosed, I gather.

Welcome,

Have the Dr's run any tests to try and clarify your type? checking for antibodies is the best test to check if you have type 1 or 2 if there is any question. We have several members that I can think of that were wrongly diagnosed as type 2 initially.
Are you seeing good results form what ever treatment you are currently on?

sofaraway, thanks for the tip, I shall definately be asking for a referral to York or at least a test to confirm which type, i'm pretty sure they haven't done an antibodies test. I'll ask.

Treatment wise they initially tried me on 2 500mg Metformin tablets a day which brought my levels down from highteens/low 20s down to about 10ish on average. I'm currently on 3 which seemed to have brought me to sub 7 but my last HbA1c was still slightly over (but partly covered the time I was on 2 tablets so couldn't be conclusive).

Now that i've been on 3 tablets for a few months this latest HbA1c result on Thursday (not tomorrow like I thought) should shed more light on my progress. I think it's likely i'll be onto 4 tablets a day....unless they do diagnose me as LADA at which point it sounds like i'll be onto insulin asap.

steff09, the X-Pert course was very good for me because I was fairly ignorant. Its main use for me was understanding what diabetes is, how it affects my body and how the medication (in my case Metformin) works too. That was the first week (then refreshers every other week) but the other weeks were mostly focused around diet, which was good because I took my personal chef (AKA my wife) with me and we both learnt about what I should and should not be doing.

The only issue for me is a lack of reassurance. Being 25, by far the youngest person on my course, and by far the thinnest, I was never sure the people leading it were sure what my future has in store. The advice was aimed at the over 50s who were overweight. They told me it probably best to try to get to York Hospital, so that's what I'm going to do....
