Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed as type II in 1997 and for the first five years took metformin which was great for BG control but gave me the worst diarrhea known to mankind. I told my GP that I couldn't take it any more, there's a limit to the functions you miss without people making stuff up. Unfortunately Rosiglitazone had an even worse side effect, I started gaining weight so the GP decided I should take Citilapram for anxiety, this helped me not worry about getting fatter and fatter, right up to 27st. At this point my liver function started to deteriorate and I was put back on Metformin, the side effect not so bad because I was taking cocodomol for the muscle pains caused by statins, Arthritis, sciatica and muscular spasms. One good thing about coming off Rosiglitazone was that I lost 4 st.
Last July I decided to go against what my previous GP and dietitian had advised and I cut out pasta/rice/bread/potato. My present GP just said be careful which was a fair warning as my BG plummeted. I'm now another 4st lighter, my HbA1c was 6.4 and total cholesterol was 5.4 as of yesterday when I went to see nursey. I haven't taken Gliclazide, Januvia or Atorvastatin for 7 months because lowering my carbs lowered my BG and cholesterol by so much.
BTW, I'm married, retired, no kids, two cats, love to travel and still trying to find out why I don't lose weight on 1,000-1200 cals a day. Poor old GP doesn't have a clue.

Welcome to the forum! You will find that we're a friendly and helpful bunch here. 🙂

Sorry to hear about your bad reactions to meds, although it stands to reason that the main side-effects of metfartin and of the codeine in co-codamol would cancel each other out. It sounds as if you have been given the usual "classic" (and totally wrong, especially for diabetics) advice pedalled by NHS nutritionists, namely that "starchy carbs are important" (well, they are, but only in the sense that one should avoid them as much as possible).

Have you looked at the "Useful links for people new to diabetes" sticky at the top of the Newbies forum?

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you one and all for your welcome. I've learned a lot from similar forums.

robert@fm, thanks for the link, I will be checking those out in the near future. I'm the first to admit that 17 years as a diabetic and I'm still learning stuff. I've got a real bee in my bonnet about this carb thing, had I found the correct advise 17 years ago I would have had a much easier time of it. Metformin wouldn't have had the same disastrous side effects and I wouldn't have taken Rosiglitazone (no longer available in the UK). The problem I have now is that cocodomol really bungs me up so I can't really take it, the soluble stuff, much faster acting in my opinion and probably because it's more bio-available as a fizzy drink, also has 50% more salt in 4 tablets than your RDA, so fluid retention becomes a problem. My weight can go up 5 kgs in a week no trouble.
I'm usually fairly laid back about most things (citilapram flash backs LOL) but carbs and statins are near to my heart. I have to accept that I have to be grateful for what I've been able to do with just a change in diet. I hope others can get the same benefit. I'm sure there's a lot out there, it would be interesting to find out how many, perhaps the NHS would stop pushing the Eatwell plate down our mouths.
