I have only just been diagnosed with type 2. My GP informed me that it was not present six month ago, as I have a long standing cholesterol problem [Familial hypercholesterolemia] I have therefore been on statins for years and have a suitable diet.

My T2 will be managed [initially] by diet and excercise, with regular check at my surgery. As you can appreciate a lot is going on in my head, but I shall manage this and not let it takeover my life.

It is a learning curve for me, but I will learn. When my cholesterol problem was first diagnosed, I asked the specialist what would have happened had it not been, he told me my chances of living to 60 would have been 50/50, I will be 65 next February, I intend to enjoy life and have a good few more birthday's

I look forward to learning from this forum.

Cheers from the sunny south coast

Hi macabee, welcome to the forum; the information; support and encouragement you'll find on this site is priceless - amanda x 🙂

Hello Macabee and welcome to the club no-one really wants to join....But, anyway, here we all are and you will find, I'm sure, lots of advice and support on this Forum.

Glad to hear you are getting good care from your GP and I wish you good luck with controlling the Big D, instead of the other way round.

I see from your post that you are a month younger than me - I'm 65 in March 2012 - some of the youngsters on here think we are all past it but they don't write us off so we must be kind to them too !

I look forward to following your progress in your postings and wish you all the best. Use the Forum to chat, rant, ask advice, add advice of your own and no-one will think you are silly - the one thing we don't do is give medical advice but on here are people who are LIVING with Diabetes and not just pontificating on it from a professional perspective.

Right - I'll get off my soapbox now - but welcome again (and, as a previously Kentish Lass, I think the South Coast is very nice too.....) 😉

Hello there,

You might start by checking the resources in our Sticky section.
Particularly Maggies Davey's Letter to newly dxed T2s and Alan S's Test, review, Adjust.

Don't let them tell you that you don't need to test by the way, its going to be your single most important weapon to start with ....

Hi Macabee and a warm welcome to the forum, everyone is so kind and helpful here.
I am on the south coast too, in Poole Dorset. Just wondering where abouts you are.
Enjoy being here, it is a great forum.

Macabee hi and a warm welcome to this wonderful forum

Hi Macabee,

Just welcome from me too, in diabetes we are all 90%+ of our own treatment, cos we are all different though that's something certain bits of the NHS fail to recognise. Learn all you can about the thing and forums like this are a great way of doing that.

McDonagh - the DUK link doesn't seem to work for me?????? - should the www be there as well as the http?

Welcome!! I have found this forum very useful so far! Just be able to talk to other people in the same boat has helped alot!!

I completely understand the not letting it take over your life, I myself have been trying to do this but find that diabetes is on my mind most of the time but I'm getting better..

Welcome again and don't be afraid to ask ANY question's you wish, as other people have mentioned everyone here are lovely and want to help 🙂

we have to stick together 😉

Welcome to the forums macabee 🙂

Hi Macabee and welcome from me too.

Your head will be in a spin at the moment but it will get better. The best advice I can give you is to take it one step at a time and don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get everything right first time.

This forum is a wonderful place to get help and support from people who have personal experience of whatever you are going through. We have years of experience between us to call on so we can usually come up with some sensible suggestions and answers. XXXXX

Well I have been busy.

First of all thanks for all those that have responded.

Contrasting by what I have heard of some GP practices, my GP practice has been pretty quick of the mark, after seeing my GP last Thursday, I received a letter [yesterday] from the dietician for an appointment Thursday week, an appointment with the DSN, Tuesday week and I will see a Podiatrist on Monday week, a busy week indeed!

I have ordered a copy of "Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year" and I am scrutinising [again] my diet, I have over recent years, due to my cholesterol problem, been able to reduce my weight to what I consider appropriate [BMI 24.9] although I expect the dietician to advise me to lose a bit more!

I shall just wait and see.

Cheers
