Sorry if this is a stupid question but is it ok to eat grapefruit if on Metformin please?

Hi LindaMaria, yes, it's OK to eat grapefruit with metformin. However, there are quite a few other medications that you shouldn't eat grapefruit with, such as statins. There's a list here:

https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2474.aspx?CategoryID=73&SubCategoryID=103

If you are on other meds it's worth asking your pharmacist for a medication review so that you can find out if there are any possible interactions between the meds you are taking, and also if you need to avoid eating or drinking certain things 🙂

... and if Metformin gives you gastric problems maybe not!

My atorvatstatin meds are marked 'do not take grapefruit products'. A bit of a b****r as I used to love a bowl of ruby grapefruit now and then.

Yes, apparently the enzymes in grapefruit concentrate the effect of statins, making them too powerful 😱

Thank you all for your comments. Touch wood no effects from the Metformin, not yet anyway. Have been on it for about 2 weeks so not sure if I should have had any by now.

Most likely by now, if you were going to get any Linda!

Don't forget that grapefruit still contains carbs in the form of fructose - in common with all fruit - so you'll have to see how they affect your BG as normal with any carbohydrate.

I have a glass of Grapefruit juice every morning with the juice from 2 lemons squeezed into it as well , I drink this to help to cleanse my fatty liver. No problems with my diabetes levels from what i have seen.

Oh ok. Thank you. So does that mean checking my blood after eating it? Sorry, but this is all so new to me. Thank you.

Yes, you need to check before and about two hours after eating. We are all different in our reaction to different foods there's no 'one size fits all', though generally carby foods will result in spikes.
