Hi I’m not a new member I’m type 2 , but last week we found out our grandson whose 9 has type 1 I am completely shocked by this , so much to take in and work out he was in hospital a week now home just a lot to take in , anyone here have young grandchildren witness this problem thanks for reading

I’m a type one for the last 67 years. Type One totally dominates your life night and day, except that the Medtronic 780 G pump with continuous glucose monitor (CGM) changes everything. I heard yesterday of an 8 year old very recently diagnosed who was put on a 780 with CGM and has taken to it like a duck to water, like me. It simplifies a complicated difficult disease, and takes care of the complicated difficult stuff. It has changed my life radically. There are other manufacturers of “closed loop” systems, so learn about the new Type One diabetes systems and fight like hell for your grandson to get one. He will get used to it quickly and easily.

Thank you for prompt replies , I don’t know yet what apparatus he has apart from he has something in his arm at the top and a small device he injects into his tummy with insulin seen him with the needle popping out that first drop so he knows it’s working , both parents have been given leave for a fortnight due to stress and to get to know the procedures of carbs etc but I am amazed how well he’s doing himself and injecting he’s such a small child , but will ask about the devices he has thanks again

I was diagnosed aged 7 (mid '80s), it's fine, it really isn't a major issue (but we're all different) - I went off to boarding school, university, worked abroad, play sport, ride bikes a reasonably long way, etc. without it causing any major issues.

I hope he settles in well, and I really hope you don't let him see it as being something that will limit him (too much - I realise I'm not going to be an astronaut, but then nor are most people!)

Yes, there is a lot to get your head around but, nowadays, it does not have to dominate his life.
Just look at the famous people with Type 1 - International football and rugby players, a full team of professional cyclists, pop stars, actors, ... we even had a prime minister with Type 1 diabetes.
It might be challenging to be an astronaut but I would not say "never"... at least not because of diabetes.

Thank you again for your wise words so far so good he does have the CGM so that’s good no fighting to get it thanks for all replies you have all helped

Sorry to hear about your grandson @Outofsorts

Glad to hear he is getting on OK and the family have been given a decent chunk of time to begin to adjust and get their heads around things.

One resource that is often recommended on the forum is Ragnas Hanas’s book: Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People which the family might find helpful?

Oh… and there was a Spanish guy who was well on the way to being the first T1 astronaut a few years back - so anything‘s possible!

Hi everydayupsanddowns I will check this book out thank you , funnily enough hes well into space and planets so fingers crossed some day although he’s a keen footballer too
There have been a few footballers with TYpe 1 diabetes over the years.
We may remember Gary Mabbutt - he was quite a trail blazer at the time when he refused to be told he could not play professionally with diabetes.
More recently, I think Nacho is the most famous as he played for Spain not that long ago.
But it looks as if there are none in the English Premiership at the moment.

Oh I don’t know anything about football in fact I don’t do sport full stop , wish I did maybe then I wouldn’t be type 2

It's not to late to start sport or exercise. Doesn't have to be football.
Something you can do with your grandson could motivate both or you to keep going and help your diabetes together.
