got call from docs saying they’re transferring all T1d patients over to this meter and that they have one for me to pick up. They said they’ll change all my lancet/test strip prescriptions once I have used all of mine up. I currently have an accucheck Aviva nano, but does anybody use a GlucoRX? I have never heard of them before? Not sure why Doc is kinda insisting on changing either as I have never used any other kind of meter so a bit apprehensive!

TIA

Can't help with the meter. This changing meters seems to be happening to quite lot.

I have a glucoRx nexus meter. It works fine, very easy to use. Presumably a financial decision???

My surgery uses Glucomen products too. Must have done a good deal with the surgeries.

GP practices are moving people on to alternative meters with strips that cost around £10 or less, even within the same area GP practices support different meters, I have never used the gluco RX meter though all meters now have to conform to the tighter accuracy specifications that came out a while back.

Having used Aviva AccuCheck blood monitoring, I have just been moved over to Nexus by my surgery. A few months ago they changed the multiclik lancets on my old system and the pen provided was difficult to use for me with slightly arthritic hands. This Nexus system goes back to my early days with single use lancets but now these, to, are difficult to use when twisting the top off to expose the needle for the same reason. Are there any other Nexus users having similar problems?

I have a GlucoMen Lx2 and an areo and they're straightforward to use. Can also test for Ketones.

You don't have to use the pricker that comes with the meter. Though I believe the muticlix has been discontinued. I bought the fastclix in Boots they sometimes have it on offer along with the drums.

As @grovesy suggests, I would ask for a fastclix lancer and lancets - pretty much the same as the (now discontinued) Multiclix 🙂 The Nexus may be cheaper, and the reson for the change, but they do have to consider your individual situation and usability. 🙂

A friend of mine uses Glucojet lancets and finds it difficult to remove the small plastic needle protector so he uses an ordinary kitchen fork to twist the top off by carefully pushing it between the prongs (after inserting lancet into holder). Sounds bizarre but it does work.

That sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me.

You can still get the multiclix lancets on eBay. I bought some then found my original box at the back of my bedside cabinet so now have a lifetime supply!

I use a GlucoRX HCT & Ketone meter specifically designed for type 1. BG/Ketone/Haematocrit.

Haematocrit is, I think, a measure of the ratio of red blood cells to volume of blood. I believe it should be around the 45% mark for men and 40% for women but not exactly sure what is too low or too high.

As to the purpose I can only assume it's to indicate if you have anaemia or something but didn't realise that was an issue for type 1s though to be honest isn't everything haha. Find a word and precede with Diabetes and tag opathy on the end of that word. 😛

I've had a wide range of values to be honest so not sure if blood sugar levels can affect them or whether I just needed to suck on a rusty nail more often. :D

I actually have the meter from my DSN but also bought the 'dongle' version for about £11 which plugs into a smartphone and with the associated phone application your results are logged. They use the same test strips.

I think it was the most up to date meter that my centre had for handing out (for T1s) at the time (July last year for me). My CCG don't do the Flash GM so I think this is the best I can get from my centre at the moment and am happy with it. If it wasn't for the getting tired of finger pricks it would get better marks.

The GlucoRX lancet device isn't as bad as some - not overly painful for me, but I use a Accuchek Fastclix which is more gentle to the finger (I'd still use the Accuchek Softclix but it broke and was probably over 10 years old so couldn't get easily anymore).

Best bet would be to change just before moving then if he does lose them he's got a year to sort some new ones out.

I think he's planning on moving home before St Swithin's day khskel - so he won't actually be due a change of lancet let alone a whole new cartridge!

No, it's a very valid point @khskel 🙂 If I do lose the others and haven't got a replacement by St Swithin's Day then I'll end up having to use an old lancet 😱 😉 I think I'll split the box of 34 drums and put one in each box of books etc. That way I should be able to expect to have at least 6 years left to source more 🙂

The problem I have with the FastClix is having to depress the plunger on the end to 'fire' the lancer. The older system and the nexus have a a much easier way of 'cocking and firing' the lancer, it is the single use lancets with which I have an issue.

Yes - I find it harder to operate than the old 'Soft' and 'Multi' ones too Penelope. However it's still a damn sight gentler than any other stabber I've ever come across!
