Red tape is stopping thousands of family doctors from returning to work after practising abroad, their leader claimed yesterday.

Dr Maureen Baker, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said arcane rules are delaying and even putting off doctors who want to come back to the NHS.

She added patients could suffer as a growing number struggle to get an appointment with a GP – raising fears that serious illnesses could be missed.

The RCGP said as many as 5,000 family doctors, including those who have taken career breaks and extended maternity leave, are being prevented from working again in UK surgeries.
