Clinically vulnerable people have said the Government’s decision to remove all remaining Covid restrictions in England by the spring will force them to “rethink” their lives.

Douglas Kerr, 57, a supermarket worker from Plymouth in Devon, said some members of his immunosuppressed community support group were left “in tears” after Boris Johnson’s announcement on Wednesday that mandatory face masks will be scrapped from next week and self-isolation rules removed from 24 March.

“The immunosuppressed have a lot to deal with and this has just rattled them. Some of them are literally in tears. I read through the comments on our group yesterday and people are devastated,” he told i.

It was brought up in a debate in the House of Lords, ina Covid debate.

I've never been immunocompromised nor had family members that were. How had those folk used to protect themselves from catching eg flu or other respiratory bugs etc prior to Covid?

I had a friend a few years ago diagnosed with lymphoma, she was advised to avoid people with colds, flu, and any infections.

Well any of us can only do that if everyone we are likely to meet bothers to tell us - and we hadn't used to worry too much about that since wherever we went, we were unlikely to 'be all over' people we didn't know well. So - nothing's changed really, has it, being absolutely logical?

Except of course, it has changed quite a lot - we've been told by the Government of this country and this was endorsed by the WHO and backed up by other countries' governments to be terrified - and quite frankly - pretty much OCD - about other peoples' breaths.

Now they expect us to just stop this OCD behaviour overnight, just like that.

When people have OCD, even though they themselves know their own behaviour is OTT, they CANNOT stop doing it 'just like that' - and so do the medical profession and so does anyone with a brain who knows anyone with OCD - even virtually - so why the ffffffffffffff do our Gov think we can?

This government don't 'think', they just spray out words that suit their own purposes :( I think one of the differences with Covid, especially omicron, is that it is really, really transmissable - not sure if more so than flu. Also the consequences are still largely unknown - over 1m are thought to have 'long Covid'. I would have preferred that the government wait just a little bit longer until we are truly over the peak and prevalence is much reduced before lifting restrictions, but that wouldn't suit Johnson as he doesn't have much time before Sue Gray Day 😱

Quite right northerner. ‘Save Big Dog’ and throw the vulnerable to the wolves. The PM acknowledges the continuing severe risk to the genuinely vulnerable and suggests ‘they continue to protect themselves’. Trouble is, he doesn’t say how when the Govt now sanctions the Covid positive to circulate freely in the community, unmasked and unchallenged and probably asymptomatic (at least you can hear the mucous troopers approaching!). Many immunocompromised made no antibody response to the vaccines (including me). Thankfully I’ve since survived Covid and am only thankful it wasn’t last year I got it because Omicron is a different proposition. The Govt boast of their anti-viral and monoclonal antibody roll out for the CEV but thousands of our members are scrabbling around trying to get their names on lists.
However, ‘Big Dog’ needed a quick, happy fix for his back benchers and so they got it….virtually overnight! 🙄

Hope you’re keeping well 🙂

They were saying on Independent Sage that some have had long Covid for more than 18 months and last their jobs.
