Hi everyone

I got the results from my annual blood tests yesterday. They tested SO many things. I haven't seen the nurse or doc yet - just picked up a print out from the surgery. My hba1c was 36! Which I am delighted about . I really wasn't expecting that as I didn't think I'd been doing that well. I try to stick to a healthy and lowish carb diet and do exercise but have fallen off the wagon quite a lot since my last test last summer - so a very surprising but exciting result! Not so good on the cholesterol though - its gone up from 5.5 to 6.2 - trigs 2.2 (was 1.8) - LDL 3.8 (was 3.6) HDL 1.4 (was 1.1) so the HDL a bit better. I am wondering if I should start taking the dreaded statins? I was prescribed them last year, but haven't taken them. I was hoping my cholesterol would go down with the lifestyle changes - but it hasn't :( I have an appt to see the practice nurse in three weeks - nothing has been said about seeing the doc yet. Oh - I also have a vitamin D deficiency apparently and the dr is going to ring me on Monday to talk about that. I really don't want to take statins, but I'm also very scared of having a heart attack or stroke - my dad had both. It's hard to know what to do x

Well done on your hba1c !

Cant advise on the statins, sorry x

Kathy,
Thats great on your hba well done you .Im currently on atorvastatin and like you I didnt take it for ages but after a shock result back in February which was my cho was that bad the lab could not even get a result back it was so fatty, i have take a statin every day since then. Also my father had a stroke 2 years ago a very fit and healthy man for 68 on no medication or nothing was just out of blue, so i try and take no notice of things that way but we are all diffirent i guess. I was given a lesson why statins are important for me so I wont be neglecting taking them again.

Good HBA1C.
I won't take Statins and had too much pain with them.

Fabulous HbA1c result Kathy! 🙂 As for the cholesterol, it's not terrible - mine was 6.2 a couple of years ago, but is now down to 4.5 without doing anything special - it fluctuates. I don't take statins - in my case, after seeing the figures I didn't think it was worth it. If you look at the actual statistics, if 100 people take statins then it will prevent cardiovascular 'events' in three of them - that's three more than if the whole 100 people didn't take them, and they make no difference to the other 97. The decision to be made is whether you think you would be one of the three that would be protected. When doctors are thinking about populations those three prevented events adds up to a lot of people! As you have family history then you may be at higher risk than some others with similar levels. Do let the GP know your concerns if they are suggested.

Excellent A1c - well done, Kathy!😛:D😛
