Have just come back from seeing the nurse regarding my 6 monthly diabetic review and although my HABAIC has gone up slightly to 6.9%, she said she wasn't too concerned. My BP was fine and my weight is still something that can be adjusted (i've recently joined SW so hope in 6 months time I will be able to get a good result on the scales).

Her concern, however, is still my cholesterol, it is 5.8 even though i am on the highest simvastatin dose (80mg). I have bought myself a cholesterol testing monitor this morning so will try and monitor it regularly. Not sure really what I can do about this damn cholesterol :(

Sounds like a good appointment Carina, overall 🙂 Sometimes people are tried on different statins if simvastatin doesn't do the trick. Did they give you a breakdown of the cholesterol into HDL and LDL? Usually, they are less concerned about the total if the HDL value is good. You might be able to get some benefit from trying some of the cholesterol-lowering foods, like Benecol etc., I think someone here said that it may reduce your cholesterol by around 10% so might be worth a try.

Hi Carina, I was switched from simvastatin to atorvastatin about 6 months ago, I haven't got or had high cholesterol, so it is just preventative. I must say that simvastatin gave me achey joints and I don't get this side effect anymore. Atorvastatin is much more expensive though.....but might be worth a try?

Hi Carina I had the same thing happen as Phil and the simvistatin gave me achey joints, then i was put on atorvastatin and that was so much better, definetly worth a shot x

I couldn't take either of the normal statins, and ended up with all sorts of problems, cramps, aching joints etc., and my CK levels rose to 409, when it should have been about 60. I was so fatigued and in so much pain, I couldn't work.
It got so bad that I had to see a consultant rheumatologist, who immediately stopped all statins. She told me that it could take up to 2 years for the symptoms to subside. Statins aren't for everyone.
Kelly.

thanks for the advice about the different kind of statin, i will certainly mention that when i next see my GP. I must admit that i do get achy joints and a bit of muscle pain so will certainly mention all this.

Northerner: i asked for a print out of my results today but she couldn't do it for some reason but will get a print out and breakdown of my overall results next week, i know i've had my results printed out before so will keep you all informed 🙂

Congratulations on the great HbA1c result Carina! 🙂
Hope the cholesterol comes down soon for you x
